There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a/an Automotive Mechanic without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element, applicants should document experience or show the ability to make necessary adjustments and conduct operational tests; perform daily maintenance and repair; and work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

Physical Effort: This position requires more than a moderate degree of physical exertion and includes standing, stooping & bending, stretching, kneeling, crouching, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The work is performed overhead spaces or in hard-to reach and cramped locations. Frequent lifting of parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds is required and occasionally may lift and carry heavier items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: Work may be done inside a shop or outside, exposing the incumbent to prevailing weather conditions. Exposure to drafts, vehicle fumes, dirt, grease and dust is common. May stand on hard surfaces for long periods of time, crawl under vehicles, and may be required to work under vehicles exposed to dampness, heat or cold. Vehicle fluids, battery acids and solvents may cause burns or skin irritation. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, bums, strains while working.
Independent judgment is used centered on provisions in technical manuals and recognized trade practices. The incumbent is required to use all personal safety equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection, and respirators in accordance with all safety and environmental
control programs.
Selective Placement Factor(s): Selective placement factors are applied in the same manner as minimum qualification requirements.
