Conditions of employment
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

- This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).

- This position requires incumbent to possess and maintain an EPA Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC) Certification.
- This position requires incumbent to possess and maintain a government license to operate naval hospital equipment as required.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Automotive Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex automotive mechanic functions such as troubleshooting and repairing gas and diesel engines, and transmissions. I am skilled in troubleshooting and repairing other automotive systems including gear reduction systems, trans axles, drive line, and rear axle assemblies. I can isolate malfunctions by utilizing a combination of visual and auditory examinations, and the use of test equipment such as computerized engine analyzers, compression testers, test benches, oscilloscopes, and multimeters. I am able to install and repairs minor vehicle accessories such as windshield wipers, washers, heaters, defrosters, and control panel switches. I can make decisions independently using judgement and accepted trade practices. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
- Physical Effort: Automotive workers at this level make repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. They frequently stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, crawl under vehicles, and make repairs in other tight spaces. They frequently lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Occasionally, they move moderately heavy items with assistance or with mechanical devices, including objects weighing up to or over 23 kilograms (50 pounds).
- Working Conditions: The work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Automotive workers occasionally perform work outside under adverse weather conditions. They are continually exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. To reduce dangers and irritations from these conditions, they follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, and respirators.
