This position is being filled using the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) local hiring authority (16 USC 3198). Any U.S. Citizen who has acquired special knowledge or expertise regarding the natural or cultural resources of Katmai National Park and Preserve, by reason of having either lived or worked in or near the unit may apply. See Qualifications section for eligibility requirements.

Duties of the position include but are not limited to the following:

• Replaces solenoids, relays, control modules, water pumps, fuel injectors, spark plugs, brake pads/shoes, wheel bearings/hubs, ball joints, control arms, steering linkages, exhaust components, cooling system components, engine components, belts, hoses, tires, and complete assemblies such as engines, transmissions, transfer cased, transaxles and rearends.
• Services and checks air conditioning systems, including purging and recharging systems, flushing radiators and replacing anti-freeze solutions, and aligning cars and trucks by adjusting caster, camber and toe.
• May assist with, or prepare monthly reports, requisitions for supplies and parts, job reports and vehicle labor and parts forms.
• Responsible for neatness and organization of work area and assigned tools; parts control and inventory, immediate cleanup of any spills or other concerns that may present a hazard to shop personnel or others.

• You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

• You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.

• You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

• You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

• You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to five nights per month.

• You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

• Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

• Eligible for conversion to competitive service after two years and upon meeting all requirements.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 2-year trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

This trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required. Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

Areas considered "near" Katmai National Park and Preserve are Federal Subsistence Areas of Unit 17C, as well as Unit 9A, 9B, 9C, and 9E, to include the communities of Naknek, King Salmon, Dillingham, Clarks Point, Ekwok, South Naknek, Koliganek, Port Alsworth, Nondalton, Pedro Bay, Iliamna, Newhalen, Kokhanok, Igiugig, Levelock, Egegik, Pilot Point, Ugashik, Port Heiden, Chignik, Chignik Lagoon, Chignik Lake, Perryville, and Ivanof Bay.

The following are the competencies identified for this position. Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies.

1. Knowledge of various techniques for removing, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories such as filters, tires, radiators, engine thermostats, wheel cylinders, etc.
2. Basic understanding of electricity and hydraulics and the skill needed to make adjustments and settings, such as performing engine tune-ups, setting engine timing according to specifications, etc.
3. Basic understanding of on-board computer diagnostic systems and other test equipment and ability to analyze test results in order to locate improperly functioning parts for repair or replacement.
4. Skill in the use of basic tools common to the occupation (e.g. wrenches, sockets, ratchets, impact wrenches, etc.).
5. Ability to read and interpret parts manuals and manufacturer's repair manuals.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
