Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.

You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to five nights per month.

You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

Eligible for conversion to competitive service after two years and upon meeting all requirements.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 2-year trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
This trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:
- your performance and conduct;
- the needs and interests of the agency;
- whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and
- whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated.
Upon completion of your trial period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required. Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

Areas considered "near" Katmai National Park and Preserve are Federal Subsistence Areas of Unit 17C, as well as Unit 9A, 9B, 9C, and 9E, to include the communities of Naknek, King Salmon, Dillingham, Clarks Point, Ekwok, South Naknek, Koliganek, Port Alsworth, Nondalton, Pedro Bay, Iliamna, Newhalen, Kokhanok, Igiugig, Levelock, Egegik, Pilot Point, Ugashik, Port Heiden, Chignik, Chignik Lagoon, Chignik Lake, Perryville, and Ivanof Bay.

The following are the competencies identified for this position. Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies.
- Knowledge of various techniques for removing, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories such as filters, tires, radiators, engine thermostats, wheel cylinders, etc.
- Basic understanding of electricity and hydraulics and the skill needed to make adjustments and settings, such as performing engine tune-ups, setting engine timing according to specifications, etc.
- Basic understanding of on-board computer diagnostic systems and other test equipment and ability to analyze test results in order to locate improperly functioning parts for repair or replacement.
- Skill in the use of basic tools common to the occupation (e.g. wrenches, sockets, ratchets, impact wrenches, etc.).
- Ability to read and interpret parts manuals and manufacturer's repair manuals.

There is no substitution of education for the required special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof as outlined in this announcement.
Additional information
A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.
This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Physical Demands: The incumbent is required to make repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and the work performed frequently involves standing for long period of time, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles, and making repairs in other tight spaces. The incumbent frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and occasionally moves moderately heavy items weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with assistance or with mechanical devices.
Working Conditions: Work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Occasionally the work may be performed outside under adverse weather conditions. The incumbent is continually exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. To reduce the dangers and irritations from these conditions, the incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, and respirators.
