Duties

  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses malfunctions/failures and performs required adjustments/repairs. May operate patron/NAF activity motor vehicles for the purpose of road testing or moving the vehicle in or out of the work area.
  • Installs, replaces or repairs items involving moderate complexity within the following systems: ignitions, charging, exhaust, brakes, air conditioning, front suspension, emission control, fuel, starting, and drive train assembly.
  • Adjusts settings, according to manufacturer's specifications for ignition point and timing, voltage regulator, points, gapping spark plugs, engine idle and carburetor air/fuel mixtures, etc.
  • May assist in performing major repairs to engines, transmissions, differentials, and suspensions. May give safety instruction classes to patrons.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctions and isolates problems to defective parts or major assemblies and independently replaces those parts that can be replaced without complete tear down of major assemblies.
  • Use a variety of test equipment, such as tech, dwell, timing light, oscilloscopes, compression gauges, emission analyzers, engine and chassis dynamometers, charging system meters, combustion analyzer, air conditioning, and diagnostic unit.

  • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • Stands, stoops, bends, stretches, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods of time.
  • Frequently lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds).
  • Occasionally, move moderately heavy items with assistance or with mechanical devices, including objects weighing up to or over 23 kilograms (50 pounds).
  • Satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E-Verify) check.
  • Subject to satisfactory completion of all pre-employment checks in accordance with AR 215-3, Chapter 2 to include a medical examination.
  • Incumbent may be required to complete a Tier 1 background investigation for a Common Access Card for physical access to federally-controlled facilities.
  • Work is performed inside a shop or outdoors in areas, which are dirty, oily, and greasy. There is constant exposure to minor cuts, bruises, and burns.
  • Exposure to drafts, vehicle fumes, and may stand on hard surfaces for lengthy periods, crawl under vehicles, and may be required to work under vehicles while exposed to dampness, heat or cold.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license as required by local/state or military regulations.

Qualifications

1. Knowledge of the operation and installation of all components, assemblies, and systems of vehicles (such as engines, transmissions, front and rear-end assemblies, power steering and braking mechanisms, electrical and hydraulic systems) sufficient to isolate malfunctions to the defective component(s) and to affect those repairs that can be performed without complete tear down and rebuild of the component.
2. Ability to remove and reinstall major and minor components and to perform required alignment and adjustment.
3. Skill in the use of a variety of test equipment such as compression gauges, thickness, multimeter, and pressure gauges and skill in the use of such tools.
4. Must understand technical manuals and be able to reference parts and materials.
5. Demonstrated work experience directly related to the duties described above that include the skills and knowledge listed.

PCS Costs
  • Payment Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs are not authorized, based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government's interest.
FWS Allowances and Differentials
  • This is a federal wage schedule (FWS) position.
  • All FWS employees are entitled to overtime work for work in excess of 8 hours in a day or in excess of 40 hours in the administrative workweek, whichever provides the greater benefit to the employee.
  • Regular full-time, regular part-time (to include those in a limited tenure appointment category) and regularly scheduled flexible employees are entitled to Sunday premium pay when working Sunday shifts. A FWS employee will be paid a night shift differential of 7.5% for the entire shift when a majority of the employee's regularly scheduled non-overtime hours of work occur between the hours of 1500 and 2400. A FWS employee will be paid a night shift differential of 10% of the scheduled rate if a majority of the employee's regularly scheduled non-overtime hours of work occur between the hours of 2300-0800.
