Duties
Serves as a recognized aircraft evaluation maintenance subject matter expert for AED. Formulates line business (LOB) management policies and systems and ensures proper and timely implementation. Analyzes current program development, implementation and work to predict potential issues, and recommend design and integration solutions for the AED functions. Manages AED policy, schedules, implementation strategies, internal and external communications, and outreach activities. Develops new policies, procedures, and approaches that take into consideration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) policies, Government-wide rules and regulations, and external concerns.
Leads communication and implementation guidelines with AED branches for new policy changes. Leads national teams or participates to define and develop new and innovative approaches, methodologies, and/or techniques for execution of AED responsibilities. Provides division and branch management advisory service which involves identifying long and shortrange policy goals, planning procedural changes by advising on logical duties, relationships, sources, availability and full utilization of needed skills, and provides advice on applicable considerations. Analyzes policies by developing baseline performance measurements and comparing performance with the baseline. Creates new solutions and policy interpretations, as situations require. Projects may involve development of new approaches to identifying meaningful and accurate measurement techniques.
Leads teams that conduct complex and controversial studies, which result in recommendations to improve technical programs, organizational structures, management policies, and/or work distribution. Provides leadership and aircraft maintenance technical expertise or guidance to others on matters related to complex aviation processes. May lead teams of functional experts to do so. Incorporates analyses into project and program plans.
Applies aircraft maintenance experience and advanced knowledge of policies and procedures to track and analyze data to ensure compliance. Coordinates and accomplishes technical tasks.
Analyzing and developing policy, guidance, and rules to improve existing technical standards and evaluation processes for the AED.
Working as a liaison with FAA policy branches to coordinate the development of policy, rules, and guidance material.
Tracking AED compliance audits and development of tools and resources.
Developing and writing of aviation safety policy, guidance material, regulations, or related materials.
Interpreting and applying laws, policies, and regulations to compliance and analytical reviews or studies, in order to prepare and present materials to answer questions, provide advice and guidance to others and solve problems.
Identifies, analyzes and implements solutions for complex/difficult problems and recommends improvements to system and processes. Interprets guidelines and provides management advice and counsel on the operation of assigned programs and interrelationships of such programs.
Completes most assignments within the established guidelines but is given considerable discretion to select the most appropriate approach. Work is reviewed periodically, typically at major milestones and at completion for policy compliance and alignment with other work activity.
Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
General Requirements for All Positions:
- Not more than two separate incidents involving Federal aviation regulations violations in the last 5 years;
- Valid State driver's license;
- Fluency in the English language;
- No chemical dependencies or drug abuse that could interfere with job performance; and
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Medical Requirements for All Positions:
Applicants must be physically able to perform the duties of the Aviation Safety Inspector position in a safe and efficient manner, with or without a reasonable accommodation. The minimum medical requirements include the following requirements:
- Have good distant vision in each eye and be able to read, without strain, printed materials the size of typewritten characters (glasses and contact lenses permitted);
- Have the ability to hear the conversational voice (hearing aid permitted); and
- Not have any physical condition that would cause them to be a hazard to themselves or others that would interfere with their ability to fly as passengers in a variety of aircraft.
In addition, applicants for positions that require participation in the operation of the aircraft must:
- Possess a valid second – class medical certificate in accordance with FAA regulations; and
- Pass recurrent medical examinations as prescribed by the FAA.
Applicants not requiring valid second-class medical certificates who are tentatively selected will be required to:
- Provide documentation from a board-certified physician certifying that they meet the minimal medical requirements; or
- Individuals who do not meet the minimum medical requirements but who are otherwise qualified will receive an individualized assessment to determine whether they can perform the essential functions of the position.
When the predominant work involves air carrier maintenance, applicants for Aviation Safety Inspector (Airworthiness) positions must meet all of the following requirements.
- Experience involving the maintenance and repair of airframes, power plants, and systems of multi-engine aircraft of more than 12,500 pounds maximum certificated takeoff weight maintained under an airworthiness maintenance and inspection program.
- Aircraft maintenance experience in a repair station; air carrier or airline repair facility; military repair facility; or local, state, or Federal governmental agency.
- Experience involving the maintenance and repair of airframes, power plants, and aircraft systems with responsibility for certifying airworthiness.
- Aircraft maintenance work experience within the last 3 years.
- FAA Mechanic Certificate with airframe and power plant ratings.
When the predominant work involves general aviation maintenance, applicants for Aviation Safety Inspector (Airworthiness) positions must meet all of the following requirements.
- Experience involving the maintenance and repair of airframes, power plants, and aircraft systems with responsibility for certifying airworthiness.
- Maintenance experience with aircraft 12,500 pounds or less maximum certificated takeoff weight.

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-I, FG/GS-13. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Experience includes assisting, conducting, or performing various technical functions on certification activities for CFR Part 23 Normal Category Airplanes including multiengine turbojet aircraft and maintenance program activities supporting CFR Part 135 and CFR Part 91 General Operation and Flight Rules Operation. Assisting, conducting, or performing various technical functions on certification activities for CFR Part 25 Transport Aircraft and multiengine turbojet aircraft and maintenance program activities supporting CFR Part 121 air carrier/ air operators.
