Duties

  • You will independently perform limited boiler making tasks by applying established methods and techniques, and assists journeyman boilermakers in the performance of higher-level duties.
  • You will assist in repairing tubes to include removing, plugging, window patching, annealing, bending, expanding, and installing tubes in boilers, heat exchangers, preheaters, and fuel oil heaters.
  • You will perform hydrostatic testing of firetube boilers.
  • You will work from blueprints, specifications, and sketches.
  • You will clean firesides and watersides of watertube and firetube boilers, install handhole plates and tightening or adjusting them as necessary to pass a hydrostatic test, and repair boiler pressure parts
  • You will work as a confined space safety attendant.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Boilermaking Worker without more than normal supervision performing duties such as: 1) Assisting journeyman boilermakers with repair of boiler tubes, boiler refractories and burner throats; 2) Performing repairs and preventive maintenance on steam plant boilers and related machinery, equipment and systems; 3) Cleaning firesides and watersides of watertube and firetube boilers, installing handhole plates and tightening or adjusting them as necessary to pass a hydrostatic test, and repairing boiler pressure parts; 4) Work as a confined space safety attendant; 5) Using tools and equipment such as die angle and disk grinders, belling tool, hydrostatic test equipment, tube expander, hand drills, tube cutter, air motor, tube collapsing tool, air lance, tube puller, impact wrench, tube crimper, rotary hammer, and tube end facing tool.

Physical Demands
Lift pieces of metal weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance. Required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, and crawl in performance of duties. Moderate to heavy physical exertion is required in boiler repairs, cleaning, and other related tasks. Must be physically able to enter boiler watersides (steam and boiler water drums) and boiler firesides. Required to enter and work inside confined spaces.

Working Conditions

Hazards encountered in this rating are not unusual, except for furnace explosions, which happen occasionally due to the nature of fuel being burned. Adequate ladders, stairways, and protective guards are provided where feasible.

PPP applicants will be placed at the FPL, if determined Well Qualified (WQ). To receive priority consideration, the FPL must be the same grade level or equivalent of the retained grade or the grade held immediately prior to separation.

Military Spouse Preference applicants will be placed at the highest grade for which they have applied and are determined Best Qualified (BQ). A BQ military spouse possesses knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies comparable to others who meet the competitive referral criteria for the specific position.
