Summary

About the position: This position is located at the Top of the World Club in Pituffik Space Base, Greenland.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of barbering services. Position may require working an irregular schedule. Must be physically able to frequently lift objects weighing up to 15 pounds, and occasionally over 40 pounds. Must be able to continuously stand, walk, stoop, reach, push, pull and bend for long periods of time.

This tour of duty is unaccompanied.

Duties

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides a variety of established barbering services to patrons involving the use of a combination of different barbering techniques and tools to prepare, condition, and groom the skin and hair of the neck, face, and head.
  • Follows safety precautions by locking barbering swivel chair, seating patrons comfortably and safely, adjusting chair height to the appropriate cutting level, and regulating the swivel movements of the chair throughout barbering processes.
  • Consults with clients to understand their preferences and requirements for desired hairstyle or service.
  • Cuts and trims hair to customer's satisfaction.
  • Styles hair using chemical solutions, tonics, and styling tools.
  • Shaves, trims and shapes beards and mustaches. Washes and conditions clients' hair.
  • Applies hair treatments and coloring.
  • Provides face, scalp and neck massages.
  • Checks the condition of the skin, scalp, and hair for visible disorders such as sores, abrasions, diseases, etc., which might interfere with the requested barbering service or require medical attention before the service can be rendered.
  • Ensures that combs, scissors, razors and other instruments are cleaned and sanitized after each use in accordance with Public Health standards and procedures.
  • Workspace is kept clean, organized and professional.
  • Sweeps floor areas and wipes down barber chairs and work area between individual services.
  • Schedules appointments via telephone, in-person, or email.
  • Accepts cash and credit card payments, operates a cash register, and makes change.
  • Performs end of day cash register accountability processes.
  • May perform cash register duties at special functions or other events and during periods of slow business.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • This position requires continual use of both arms, hands, and sets of fingers and thumb. Involves frequent standing, bending, walking, and reaching.
  • This position requires dexterity in applying manual techniques from the light hand and finger touches to the firm but gentle massaging manipulations upon the patron's face, neck, shoulder, and scalp.
  • Employee must have a valid barber or cosmetology license.
  • Must have experience working as a barber in a military or commercial barbershop or salon.
  • This position has physical lifting requirement which requires the incumbent to complete a favorable pre-employment physical.
  • This position requires the incumbent to be able to obtain, maintain, and provide evidence of current immunizations this includes annual influenza vaccinations and be free of all communicable diseases.
  • This position requires the incumbent to complete a background investigation with favorable results.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. You must also provide a copy of your valid barber or cosmetology license.

Qualifying Experience:
Must have knowledge of barbering services such as shaving, cutting, and styling straight, wavy, curly, and kinky hair, and mustaches; skin and hair conditioning procedures such as shampooing and rinsing, massages, and hair tonic treatments; and haircuts such as full and half crown, trims and long, pompadours, and modem types. Must be able to visualize barbering needs of the patron by such physical features as face contour, head shape, hairline, hair length and density, or bald conditions. Must be skilled at applying a combination of edging, siding, and topping techniques in cutting hair; and tapering, blending, and shortening hair with shears and comb, fingers and shears, clipper and comb, and razor.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution in order to qualify.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
