Duties
IOS supports research to improve our understanding of whole organisms as integrated units of biological organization including the relationship between genotypes and phenotypes across social and environmental contexts. IOS welcomes projects that employ diverse integrative and/or interdisciplinary approaches to address organismal-level questions leading to new conceptual or theoretical insights or testable predictions about organismal properties. IOS encourages research that combines experimentation, computation and modelling and integrates data across spatial, temporal/biological scales. IOS also supports research leading to transformative methods, tools, and research resources.
The Neural Systems Clustersupports all areas of non-clinical neuroscience research through 3 programs covering the development, structure and evolution of nervous systems, mechanisms of sensory and motor function, and the integration and modulation of the nervous system to produce behavior.
Program Director responsibilities include: advising and assisting in the development of short and long-range scientific planning, establishing goals and objectives for research programs, developing budgets for the areas of science represented by the program to allocate resources among competitive projects, managing post award evaluation, and administrating the peer review process and proposal recommendations to ensure efficiency, integrity, and consistency without conflicts of interest, and ensuring participation by members of under-represented groups. Program Directors also prepare material describing advances in the research supported by their program, contribute to policy and procedural improvements, represent the program, division, and agency during outreach to professional societies and institutions, and coordinate efforts with other programs in NSF, other Federal agencies, and organizations. Program Directors also have opportunities to pursue individual research as time and funds permit and expand their professional skills through training and the acceptance of additional duties.

Qualifications
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related field plus after award of the Ph.D., six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position.

- Demonstrated broad knowledge and understanding of scientific principles, theories, and technologies applicable to the biological sciences in general and, in particular, to neuroscience (all areas, any organism).

- Ability to organize, implement and manage a proposal-driven grant program, allocating resources to meet a broad spectrum of program goals.
- Knowledge of management and organizational concepts, principles, practices and techniques, with expertise in research administration.
- Ability to interact with the scientific community and peers, and to advocate program policies and plans.
- Understanding of, and dedication to, the promotion of both intellectual merit and broader impacts of research and education activities.
