Summary

This position is a Biological Science Technician, GS- 0404-5/6/7 working in Tishomingo, Oklahoma for the Tishomingo National Fish Hatchery (Region 2).

Open to Public Land Corps (Department of the Interior only); VEOA; and CTAP eligible candidates only. Public Land Corps (PLC) is a work and education program that allows individuals aged 16-30 opportunities to work on the rehabilitation and restoration of public lands. Successful completion of a qualifying PLC project and at least 640 hours of work may qualify applicants for a permanent position in the Department of the Interior.

Duties

Tishomingo National Fish Hatchery (Hatchery), located in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, raises warm water species, predominately the interjurisdictional paddlefish, for re-establishment of populations fragmented by large dams on the Arkansas and Red rivers. The Hatchery also rears alligator snapping turtles and alligator gar, both considered to be imperiled within their native ranges. Some production of channel catfish is undertaken for recreational fishing programs on Tribal lands, National Wildlife Refuges, Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation areas, and military installations.

As a Biological Science Technician your duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • daily caretaking of fish.
  • seasonal spawning and packing of eggs for shipment.
  • counting and sorting fish.
  • routine grounds maintenance, snow removal, and office custodial duties.
  • assisting with education and outreach tours.
  • maintenance of hatchery equipment.
  • construction of egg shipping boxes.
  • routine use of computers to input timesheets, respond to emails, maintenance of electronic data in accordance with policies.

  • Driver’s License: This position requires the incumbent to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of their official duties. Selectee must hold and maintain a valid state driver’s license throughout their employment in this position.

  • Probationary Period: Selectees may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 01/02/2025 will be considered.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification.

Minimum Qualification [GS-05]:
  1. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or higher in the Federal service, or equivalent non-Federal experience. Specialized experience includes: fish surveys and studies; recording information in legible form; accomplishing field assessments; assisting with collection, population determination, migration studies and species identification; participating in fishery management surveys; assisting with preparing plans and presentations. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient information in these areas to be found qualified.OR
  2. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled such as fishery biology, ichthyology, limnology, aquaculture, etc. OR
  3. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement
Minimum Qualification [GS-6]:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or higher in the Federal service, or equivalent non- Federal experience. Specialized experience includes care and feeding of all life stages of fish. Record and monitor fish health, maintain and update fish culture and water quality records, maintain and improve hatchery infrastructure, equipment and grounds. Rearing, distribution and maintenance of eggs, fry, parr, smolts, yearlings, and broodstock. Collect, process and inventory eggs. Follow established spawning procedures, perform routine health assessments including: necropsies of morbid fish, collecting ovarian fluid samples, external examination of fish for parasites and collecting blood samples. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient information in these areas to be found qualified.

Minimum Qualification [GS-7]:
  1. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or higher in the Federal service, or equivalent non-Federal experience. Specialized experience includes: Collects biological information for fish studies, field investigations, and surveys; Provides guidance and technical assistance to field crews; leads fish surveys and field studies; logs data for habitat surveys and records data for laboratory analysis; performs capturing, measuring, counting, weighing, tagging, and tracking fish counting devices (e.g. weirs, sonar, screw traps). NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient information in these areas to be found qualified. OR
  2. Have successfully completed one year of graduate level education (18 semester/27 quarter hours or the school's equivalent) in an accredited college or university of that included courses directly related to the occupation, such as fishery biology, ichthyology, limnology, aquaculture, etc.OR
  3. Possess an appropriate combination of GS-06 level specialized experience and graduate level education, which, when combined, is equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirements (You must provide a copy of your college transcripts).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
