Summary

These Temporary positions, NTE 1039 hours, are located in Indiana Dunes National Park.

Open to the first 108 applicants or until 01/10/2025 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration.

Duties

Positions will be filled at either the GS-5, GS-6, and/or GS-7 level, depending upon selectee's qualifications and park funding availability. All positions may not be filled or they may be filled at different times depending on budget, hiring needs, and requirements. These positions have no known promotion potential, if you want to be considered for a higher grade, you must indicate what grade levels you want to be considered for.

Some of the duties you will perform include, but are not limited to,

  • Monitor vegetation and survey for oak wilt disease
  • Collect and send samples for laboratory analysis
  • Record and maintain project data using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology.
  • Organize project data

For the GS-5: You may implement established natural resource management projects and assist in the preparation of reports and plans.

For the GS-6: The position includes assisting with the organization of project data for ecological resource management project implementation. You may implement established natural resource management projects and assist in the preparation of reports and plans.

For the GS-7: The primary duties of the position include assisting with ecological resource management project implementation, and leading field staff. You may train, lead, and supervise staff, interns, and/or volunteers conducting ecological resource management fieldwork, including but not limited to plant and plant disease identification, data collection, sample collection, mapping, and tool and equipment use and maintenance. You may organize, schedule, and execute a variety of established natural resource management projects, ensure adequate quality control of data, and prepare draft project reports.

Indiana Dunes National Park is a 15,000-acre park located at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, approximately 45 miles southeast of Chicago. The park is among the top 10% of most visited park units annually; it is within 3 hours of 30 million people, includes 15 miles of Lake Michigan's southern shoreline, several historic districts, and over 50 miles of trails, dune, wetland, and prairie ecosystems. The park is the birthplace of the science of ecology, has some of the most diverse plant and avian communities in the National Park Service, and hosts an array of exceptional cultural resources. Conditions of Employment

  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.   • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/10/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:applying/performing a variety of manual, mechanical, and chemical methods to manage forest health threats; performing basic vegetation inventories, studies, and surveys; and participating in vegetation management through seed collection, planting, propagating, and weeding. Must include start/end dates and hours worked per week.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four (4) year course of study (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least twenty-four (24) semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, mathematics, etc. At least six (6) semester hours were directly related to this position (i.e., plant taxonomy, botany, forestry, plant ecology, etc.). Must provide transcripts.-OR-Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Only education exceeding the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience. Must provide transcripts. Must include start/end dates and hours worked per week.

To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: organizing program data and information; applying/performing a variety of manual, mechanical, and chemical methods to manage forest health threats; performing basic vegetation inventories, studies, and surveys; and participating in vegetation management through seed collection, planting, propagating, and weeding. Must include start/end dates and hours worked per week.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year (18 semester hours or equivalent) of graduate level study that directly applies to the position such as botany, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, etc. Must provide transcripts.-OR-Successful completion of a combination of graduate education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Must include start/end dates and hours worked per week. You must include transcripts.

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: serving as a project lead to implement ecological resource surveys and management; organizing program data and information; applying/performing a variety of manual, mechanical, and chemical methods to manage forest health threats; performing basic vegetation inventories, studies, and surveys; and participating in vegetation management through seed collection, planting, propagating, and weeding. Must include start/end dates and hours worked per week.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year (18 semester hours or equivalent) of graduate level study that directly applies to the position such as botany, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, etc. You must include transcripts.-OR-Successful completion of a combination of graduate education and experience as described above. Note: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Internships not completed as a part of your educational curriculum, and recorded on your transcript, will not be considered qualifying as education. However, it may be considered qualifying for specialized education. Must provide transcripts. Must include start/end dates and hours worked per week.

Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs and equipment up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.

Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather and terrain conditions, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, snakes, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.
