Summary

This position supports the USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station, Forest Watershed Science Program in New Ellenton, SC and performs duties in support of the wildlife management program.

Duties

  • Identify woody plant species common to the area.
  • Identify wildlife species by sight or sound, often with the aid of specialized equipment such as audio recording devices and trail camera images.
  • Perform complicated tests following standard procedures to support work in the wildlife management program.
  • Use technical methods and procedures of wildlife biology to carry out a variety of duties such as trapping, taking measurements, conducting tests and field surveys, and collecting samples.
  • Maintain field equipment in good working condition.
  • Develop reports on the characteristics and quality of the samples of field tests.
  • Develop accurate records and make presentations of findings.
  • Normal color and stereovision are essential for accurate recognition of color bands, plant, and animal species; normal hearing is required.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-5:
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level in Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as 2 or more of the following:
  • Completing a variety of technical duties related to wildlife biology, including collecting data, taking measurements, conducting tests, completing surveys, recording observations, and/or collecting samples.
  • Recording, managing, and summarizing wildlife biology data and/or developing wildlife biology reports.
  • Utilizing a compass, GPS unit, road map, topographic map, and or/aerial photos.
OR
A bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics and at least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled.

OR
Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

Work is performed in remote forested landscapes, mostly during the day but may include early morning and evening hours. Terrain is steep, uneven, rocky, covered with thick, tangled vegetation, etc. Temperatures range from hot and dry to extremely wet and/or cold. Rain, hot sun, cold nights, wind, and dust will be encountered. Stinging insects, like bees and wasps, are common throughout all study areas; rattlesnakes and other venomous snakes are present on some study areas. Work requires the use of safety equipment such as boots, gloves, goggles, satellite phones, and hard hats. Driving on mountainous and remote roads during day and night will be required. Position may require camping in remote wilderness areas.
