Duties
These positions are located within the Division of Natural Resource Management at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
The main duties of this position will include recognizing and documenting piping plover breeding behaviors; identifying piping plover nest scrapes, locating piping plover nest sites, and implanting protective management actions; assisting with the Integrated Pest Management program; collecting field data and recording the data into established or new databases; and collecting GPS and GIS data in the field.
- You may serve on a field crew responsible for monitoring a variety of wildlife species and their habitats, including piping plovers; conducting surveys for various mammalian species including black bear activity; installing and tending to acoustic monitoring equipment in remote field locations (frog and/or bat monitoring); monitoring campgrounds for problem bear and/or other wildlife monitoring.
GS-06: You will assist a GS-7 crew lead with directing the field crew. Successful applicants will serve on teams that may include permanent and seasonal NPS staff, interns, volunteers, and staff from other agencies. You may be asked to occasionally lead volunteers in selected projects or work independently. Leading a crew of volunteers, making educational contacts with visitors, and assisting with other natural resource program areas as needed, under the direction of a field crew supervisor.
GS-07: You will serve as a program lead to implement new and established natural resource management projects involving integrated pest management (IPM), piping plover protection, and BARK Ranger volunteers, with an emphasis on visitor education. Duties will include training and coordinating volunteers; identification of a variety of shorebirds and mammals; collecting field data, recording field data in established or new databases; implementing prevention and control strategies to manage pest species; providing outreach/education content for social media posts; coordinating outreach and media contacts; and administrative tasks.
GS-06/07: A portion of time will be dedicated to project logistics and preparatory groundwork, equipment acquisition/maintenance, data entry, preparation of Field and Project Reports, and conducting administrative tasks in an office setting.
Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs and equipment up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Overnight backcountry camping for 5-10-day periods can be expected once a month or more. The duties of this position require hiking off trail in forest and dune environments where the terrain is uneven, steep at times, and hiking for long periods of time along shoreline exposed to sun, wind, and rain. Staff may be hiking as much as 9 miles per day in various types of terrain while carrying backpacks, tools, and equipment.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. There is possibility of contact with stinging insects, poison ivy, and various other hazards from variable climatic conditions. Numerous trips using a National Park Service (NPS) boat operated to conduct work on the Lakeshore's islands will occur. Weather conditions may vary from cold (20-15 degrees F.), snowy, rainy and windy in the spring and fall to sunny, hot (95-100 degrees F.) and humid in the summer. Some assignments will require being prepared to camp overnight for several days in the backcountry.
AREA INFORMATION: This position is located within the Department of Interior, National Park Service at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Empire, Michigan. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is within the beautiful scenic resort area on the northeastern shores of Lake Michigan. Housing, medical facilities, shopping, churches, banks, day care, recreational activities, schools, and colleges are readily available within a 30 mile radius, and laundry is available within a 18-25 miles from park headquarters in Empire. - GOVERNMENT HOUSING IS AVAILABLE. Shared government housing may be available for rent. Laundry services are not available in park housing or Empire but can be found in Traverse City or Beulah (18-25 miles). You must be willing to work throughout the Lakeshore. Camping during work hours on the remote Manitou Islands for extended periods of time (approximately 5 consecutive nights; 10 nights per month) will be required (essential camping gear is provided by the park).
