Summary

What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

The Government-wide direct hire authority for Biological Science GS-0401 is being used to fill this position.

This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months. The agency has the option of extending the term appointment, up to a maximum of 10 years from the date of appointment. Such extensions are not guaranteed nor an employee entitlement. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

Duties

As a Biologist within the Western Ecological Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Conduct field studies and train others on migratory waterfowl and waterbirds.
  • Analyze complex datasets, including spatial datasets with advanced statistical programs, including R, SAS, Program Mark and ArcGIS.
  • Conduct scientific tests utilizing Nippon MA-3000 direct mercury analyzer and USEPA Method 7473.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, prepare reports and give oral presentations on research.
  • Identify and seek funding, experimentally designing research, and establish sampling procedures for waterbird ecology studies.

Physical Demands
The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; and bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The work requires moderate physical ability and average agility and dexterity.

Work Environment
Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

Salary Information
$108,245 (Step 01) to $140,713 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
*OR*
B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level.

Examples of experience at the GS-11 level may include: 1) independently planning and conducting comprehensive biological studies and investigations; 2) modifying and adapting standard biological techniques, processes, and procedures; 3) serving as a technical resource on biological issues. For examples 1-3, the assignments were planned and carried out independently, resolving most of the conflicts that arose, coordinating the work with others as necessary, relating new work situations to precedent ones, extending or modifying existing techniques, and interpreting and applying program policy in terms of established objectives.
