Summary

About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities

Duties

  • Serve as a shift supervisor in the Central Power Plant, exercising full supervisory responsibility over work operation.
  • Exercise full supervisory responsibility over work operations and subordinate civilian personnel.
  • Plan weekly and monthly work schedules and sequence of operation for subordinates.
  • Explain Boiler Plant work requirements, methods and procedures to subordinates.
  • Determine boiler plant work assignments to be accomplished concurrently.
  • Assure material is ordered and delivered to work sites to prevent work-stoppage.
  • Determine equipment, supplies, and/or maintenance required to complete Boiler Plant tasks.
  • Drive 1/2 - 3/4 ton truck to and from work site.

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires successful Pulmonary Function testing.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain valid Government Motor Vehicle Operators Identification Card (OF346) for all equipment the incumbent must operate within 30 calendar days.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.

Physical Effort: The incumbent is not subject to sustained physical effort. Occasionally, the incumbent works in awkward and cramped positions when making minor repairs. Frequent standing, walking and climbing is required while checking the equipment.

Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed to the normal temperatures, dust gases, danger of burns from hot pipes and equipment, conditions normally occurring in power plants. Subject to heights when taking soundings of the fuel oil storage tanks. Exposed to conditions present while working near moving machinery and high voltage electrical equipment. May be exposed to acid and alkali chemicals used in feed water treatment. Will work in confined spaces in awkward positions in dirty, greasy areas. Must be able to lift heavy objects and climb ladders. Subject to continuous noise.
