Duties

  • You will prepare and deliver graduate-level seminars, classes, courses, and workshops to meet the core communication needs of students at MCWAR, SAW, and CSC.
  • You will provide one-on-one instruction and feedback to students on communication projects, particularly class essays and research papers and projects.
  • You will prepare and present instruction for faculty and staff development on topics related to the incumbent's field of expertise.
  • You will develop curricula for specific needs of specific students in specific contexts.
  • You will prepare/revise instructional support materials like the Marine Corps University Communications Style Guide for online and print distribution to MCU community as well as broader USMC and DOD communities.
  • You will provide feedback and counsel about specialized writing curricula within the particular schools.
  • You will research and write instructional materials to improve quality of LCSC communication instruction.
  • You will conduct scholarly investigations in communication or communication education areas of inquiry.
  • You will design research projects to improve disciplinary understanding and to develop increasingly effective approaches to teaching and learning communication.
  • You will present and/or publishe papers for professional audiences.
  • You will represent MCU at professional meetings and conferences.
  • You will establish and maintain professional relationships with educators, scholars, and public officials in the field.
  • You will serve on university committees and task forces as needed.
  • You will complete staff actions or projects that enable MCU to accomplish its mission.

Qualifications

  1. Knowledge required by the position.
    1. Knowledge of adult learning theory, teaching methods, teaching strategies, and best practices as well as demonstrated expertise in writing and rhetoric, communication, English, or similar field.
    2. A master's degree in Rhetoric and Composition, Communication Studies, English, Linguistics (or related field) from a regionally accredited college or university.
    3. A minimum of five years full time specialized teaching experience as Communication Instructor in writing, rhetoric, communication, lingusitics or similar field.
  2. Supervisory Controls. The immediate supervisor of the LCSC faculty member is the Director of the Leadership Communication Skills Center. Because this is a Title 10 position, the incumbent serves at the pleasure of the President, MCU within the policy guidance for MCU.
  3. Guide Lines. MCU Staff Regulations, Faculty Handbook, and LCSC Standard Operating Procedures provide baseline guidance.
  4. Complexity. The nature of the assignment requires specialized knowledge and expertise cmrirn1mn in the design, implementation, change, and general management of the curriculum and instructional practices of the LCSC. In addition, the incumbent serves as the organization's representative with in the armed services and civilian communities.
  5. Scope and Effect. The purpose of the work is to plan, design, develop, and identify topics, curricular material, and instructional practices that meet the needs of students in the degree-granting programs at MCW AR, SAW, and CSC. The goal is to develop strong leaders who are effective communicators within the profession of arms, governmental communities, and society at large.
  6. Personal Contacts. The incumbent will be a faculty and staff colleague of officers of the grades Major through General in the armed services worldwide. The incumbent will associate with eminent professionals in a wide variety of fields. Duties require daily contact with a diverse group of military and civilian professionals.
  7. Purpose of Contacts. The purposes of contacts are to teach and exchange information; to motivate and advise; to direct and counsel students and other professionals; and to provide critique, evaluation, and support.
  8. Physical Demands. Instructing involves conducting workshops, classes, and seminars from one to four hours a day standing and sitting in a classroom. Individual (one on one) consultations require seated focused discussions. Additional work requires extensive periods of concentration, reading, analyzing, synthesizing, and writing.
  9. Work Environment. Work is performed primarily in an office or classroom, but occasionally in archives, libraries, and other university surroundings. The position is eligible for regular and situational telework at the supervisor's discretion.
