Duties

This position is located in the Division of Dam Safety Inspection, Washington, DC in the Office of Energy Projects.

As a Civil Engineer, some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Serving as a senior technical expert and performing inspections, engineering evaluations, and analyses of hydroelectric projects to ensure the safety of the projects.

    Hiking and climbing of steep inclines may be required during inspections.

  • Communicating findings from inspections, engineering evaluations, and analyses of hydroelectric projects to ensure compliance with the terms of the license, the provisions of the Federal Power Act, and the Commission’s regulations
  • Preparing engineering reports, internal memos, and letters to establish and document the dam safety and public safety of hydroelectric projects.

In addition to the education required for this position, you must have one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 level. Specialized experience is defined as: experience applying expert-level structural engineering analysis to concrete water retaining structures, gates, penstocks, and other appurtenant structures. The applicant will perform inspections, evaluations, and analysis of dams and other hydroelectric facilities.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including any volunteer experience.
