Summary

This vacancy is for a Commercial Fishing Vessel Examiner, GS-1801-11, located at Puget Sound, Seattle, WA.

Duties

In this position as a Commercial Fishing Vessel Examiner, you will examin services, technical expertise, advanced training, and project leadership in the enforcement of marine safety, pollution prevention, security, and vessel manning laws, regulations, treaties, and applicable internation conventions.
Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

  • Conducting technical reviews to determine compliance with regulations and applicable standards.
  • Determining that vessels to be examined have the proper documents and certificates on board and in effect.
  • Examining all required navigation, communication, alarm, lifesaving, firefighting, and pollution prevention systems to ensure that they are operating properly and in compliance with applicable standards.
  • Examining the vessels hull, including hull envelop, internal structural members, protrusions, fittings, appendages, special tanks, holding areas, special use structures and structural fire protection to ensure they are in sound condition.
  • Examining the vessel's machinery to ensure all equipment, machinery and systems are in safe operating condition and in compliance with applicable design, installation, and operational standards.
  • Scheduling of requested vessel inspections or examinations and subsequent assignment of marine inspectors and examiners to the activity.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-11 grade level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

OR
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree;

OR
3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree;

OR
A combination of successfully completed graduate-level education and experience. This will be calculated using your resume and unofficial transcripts or a list of courses/course hours submitted with your application.

Specialized experience must include the following:

  • Planning, scheduling, and conducting on site examinations of commercial fishing industry vessels for compliance with all applicable federal regulations;
  • Working with Federal, state, and local agencies, and fishing industry to promote commercial fishing industry safety;
  • Providing advanced training in the enforcement of marine safety, pollution prevention, vessel manning laws, regulations, treaties and international conventions.
