Duties

  • Leads a staff of 3 or more NA-04 and NA-06 cooks in the preparation of a variety of menu items. Receives instructions from manager or supervisor on duty and passes assignments down to individual members of the group being led.
  • Prepares a variety of foods and desserts according to menu requirements. Follows recipes to prepare menu items. Follows health and safety precautions to ensure safe preparation and storage of food items.
  • Roasts a variety of meats. Grills, broils, steams, and deep fries foods. Apportions foods for family style servings as well as for plate service.
  • Operates kitchen equipment designed to mix and cook food items. Assures that all equipment is cleaned, maintained, and available to employees.
  • Takes inventory to determine ordering requirements. Sets up and serves food as necessary. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E-Verify) check.
  • Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 4 hours initial food sanitation and safety training is required within 30 days of employment and a minimum of4 hours refresher training annually.
  • Medical Examination is required.
  • This position is dual compensation exempt; All GS and NAF employees holding FLEX positions are eligible to apply for this position.
  • Work hours may involve weekday, weekend, holiday and night duty.

Qualifications

  1. Ability to lead employees engaged in cooking duties.
  2. Demonstrated work experience in food preparation.
  3. Ability to perform Cook Leader duties independently (without more than normal supervision).

SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE:
Ability to direct work activities of cooks during assigned shift. Ability to plan, coordinate, and time daily assignments for completion at mealtime, and adjust recipes for number of servings needed. Knowledge of food characteristics to judge freshness, color, consistency, taste, etc., and know when food is properly cooked. Ability to instruct lower-graded cooks on cooking procedures. Ability to operate and maintain kitchen equipment. Knowledge of safety and sanitary requirements.

HIGHLY PREFERRED CRITERIA:
  • Possess at least one (1) year of experience cooking in a professional food service establishment.
The experience must be reflected on your resume at the time of application to be considered a highly preferred candidate.

  • All FWS employees are entitled to overtime work for work in excess of 8 hours in a day or in excess of 40 hours in the administrative workweek, whichever provides the greater benefit to the employee.

  • Incentives will not be paid.
Non-Foreign Overseas Allowances
  • Non-foreign overseas allowances, cost of living (COLA), and differentials will not be paid, contingent upon eligibility.
