Summary

The United States District Court for the Western District of New York is seeking a Courtroom Deputy. The Courtroom Deputy is the "face" of the court to much of the public and attorneys who practice in the Court and helps create positive public impressions about the Judiciary.

This is a sensitive position within the Judiciary. Employment will be considered provisional pending successful completion of an Office of Personnel Management background check and a favorable suitability determination.

Duties

  • Attend and assist with the orderly follow of court proceedings; set up/troubleshoot courtroom technology. Assure presence of all necessary parties, manage exhibits, and prepare minutes.
  • Keep judge and staff informed of case progress. Assist in jury selection and maintain jury selection and attendance records.
  • Serve as liaison between the Clerk's office, bar, public, and Court.
  • Schedule court reporters and interpreters; process transcripts; arrange for transcriptions; answer questions from parties and the public regarding fees, receive payments, and issue receipts.
  • Make summary entries on the docket, create and process new case files, assign case numbers, open cases and docket initial events, perform quality control on docket entries.
  • File and maintain case records. Retrieve files and make copies of records for parties. Certify court documents. Prepare, ship, and retrieve records from the Federal Records Center.
  • Process mail. Receive and stamp incoming documents.
  • Provide information regarding case status, archive information, and CM/ECF instruction.
  • Collect interpreter log sheets and manage payments to interpreters.
  • Assist other Courtroom Deputies in obtaining interpreters for non-Spanish speaking parties or when unusual interpreter requirements are identified.
  • Process transcript requests for digital audio.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualification Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Specialized experience such as progressively responsible clerical or administrative experience requiring the regular and recurring application of clerical procedures that demonstrate the ability to apply a body of rules, regulations, directives, or laws and involve the routine use of specialized terminology and automated software and equipment for word processing, data entry or report generation. Such experience is commonly encountered in law firms, legal counsel offices, banking and credit firms, educational institutions, social service organizations, insurance companies, real estate and title offices, and corporate headquarters or human resources/payroll operations.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

This position is assigned to the Office of the Clerk, U.S. District Court, Western District of New York, and reports to the Chief Deputy Clerk.
