    Responsibilities

    During the course of their careers, Criminal Investigators (Special Agents) carry out critical investigations and protection assignments.  Duties include: 

    • Providing protection for various protectees
    • Conducting investigations

    Dual Compensation Salary Off-set Waiver for Criminal Investigator (Special Agent):

    • Maximum age limit (under 60 at the time of appointment)
    • Work Full-Time 
    • Receive Overtime
    • Earn Full Annuity and Full Salary
    • Earn Annual Leave and Sick Leave
    • Term Appointment up to 4 years
    • Individuals appointed before June 30, 2022 may continue their employment until their not-to-exceed date is reached.
    • Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP) and additional compensation of 25% of the base salary will be added to locality pay.

    • Possess a current valid driver's license.

    Conditions of Employment If selected, you may be required to:

    • Obtain and maintain a Top Secret Tier 5 clearance.  For more information visit OPM Mythbuster Page.
    • Submit to a drug test and credit check prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position.
    • Submit to a polygraph examination prior to your appointment.
    • Undergo occasional domestic and foreign travel.
    • Carry and use a firearm.  Maintaining firearm proficiency is also mandatory.  You will be ineligible to occupy this position if at any time you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, unless you received a pardon or your conviction was expunged or set aside.
    • Complete a pre-employment medical examination (including vision, hearing, cardiovascular and mobility of extremities) by an authorized Government physician and be determined physically fit to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties.  You will be required to undergo regular physical examinations and to maintain a level of physical fitness in accordance with the standards and policies of this agency.
    • Successfully complete a Mixed Basic training course as applicable.
    • As required by Executive Order 14043, Federal employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of the employee's duty location or work arrangement (e.g., telework, remote work, etc.), subject to such exceptions as required by law.  If selected, you will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and submit documentation of proof of vaccination by November 22, 2021 or before appointment and onboarding with the agency, if after November 22, 2021.  We will provide additional information regarding which forms of documentation will be accepted and how you can request a legally required exception from this requirement.
    • Due to COVID-19, U.S. Secret Service is currently in an expanded telework posture.  If selected, you may be expected to temporarily telework, even if your home is located outside the local commuting area. Once employees are permitted to return to the office, you will be expected to report to the duty station listed on this announcement within 30 days.  At that time, you may be eligible to request to continue to telework one or more days a pay period depending upon the terms of the agency's telework policy.

    Qualifications

    You qualify for the GS-13 level (starting salary $79,468.00) if you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level, which is in or directly related to coordinating difficult and complex protection assignments or staff assignment including but not limited to: covering designated security post at official functions/events and restricting secure areas to authorized personnel; as assigned, keeping in close proximity to designated protectee and taking any measure required to protect his/her life; providing protection while on travel with a protectee; supporting protective operations by interviewing unauthorized individuals attempting to gain access to secure areas to determine whether a security threat exists; writing associated reports; and applying protective investigation and case management methodology.  

    National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience)  Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    General Medical Requirements:

    As determined by the Office of Personnel Management, the duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of fingers, wrist, elbows, shoulders, hips and knee joints is required.  Arms, hands, legs and feet must function sufficiently in order for applicants to perform the duties satisfactorily.

    Since the duties of this position are exacting and involve the responsibility for the safety of others under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability.  Any condition that would hinder full, efficient performance of the duties of this position or that would cause the individual to be a hazard to himself/herself or to others is disqualifying.

    There are also specific medical requirements for this position, and any chronic disease or condition affecting the respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, digestive, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic, nervous, genitourinary, and other systems that would impair full performance of the duties of the position may also be disqualifying.
