Duties

Being a Customs and Border Protection Officer makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) profession. Typical assignments include:

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture law and regulations;
  • Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel;
  • Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances;
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States; and
  • Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband

This is a career ladder position with a grade level progression of GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, and GS-12. You will be eligible for a promotion to the next higher grade level (without re-applying) once you successfully complete 52 weeks in each grade level. Promotions are at the discretion of the agency. Pay rates are based on the 2024 OPM Salary Tables and do not take into consideration any potential overtime earnings, recruitment incentives, location incentives or yearly cost of living increases.

Firearm Proficiency:
You will be required to carry a firearm. Firearm proficiency is required for all CBP Officers and is part of the training provided.

Probationary Period: You must serve a one-year probationary period during the first year of your initial permanent Federal appointment.

CBP Officer Academy: You will be required to complete a paid pre-academy orientation for approximately 2 weeks at your home port. You will then attend a 101-day training program conducted at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) located in Glynco, GA. This training consists of basic law enforcement skills, immigration laws, firearms training, examination of cargo/bags/merchandise, physical fitness, etc. Candidates assigned to the southern border, Miami or Puerto Rico duty locations must attend and pass an online Spanish training program which will be completed at their home port. Uniform/Grooming Standards: While in a duty status, this position requires wearing an officially approved uniform and complying with established grooming standards.

Residency Requirement: U.S. Customs and Border Protection has a residency requirement that applies to all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates (as declared under international law) for at least 3 of the last 5 years, before completing an application for CBP employment. If you do not meet the residency requirement and you have been physically located in a foreign location for more than 2 of the last 5 years, you may request an exception to determine if you are eligible for a residency waiver by meeting one or more of the following conditions:

  1. Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military
  2. A dependent of a federal civilian or member of the military who was working for the U.S. Government
  3. Working as a contractor employee, a volunteer, consultant or an intern for the U.S. Government
  4. Participation in a study abroad program sponsored by a U.S. affiliated college or university

Qualifications

You qualify for the GS-5 grade level if you possess one of the following:

Experience: A minimum of 3 years of general experience, 1 year of which was equivalent to at least GS-4, performing duties that required the ability to meet and deal with people and the ability to learn and be able to apply a body of facts; OR

Education Substitution: Successful completion of at least a 4-year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college or university; OR

Experience: A minimum of 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, that includes performing inspections work at borders, seaports, airports or other ports of entry and/or work involving preliminary screening of persons for entry and immigration status, or compliance/regulatory work; OR

Education Substitution: Successful completion of one year of full-time graduate education from an accredited college or university may substitute for the experience required at this level. This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise a year of graduate education. If that information is not available, use 18 semester or 27 quarter hours; OR

Age Requirement: In accordance with Public Law 110-161, this position is covered under enhanced retirement provisions. Candidates must be referred for selection to the Customs and Border Protection Officer position before reaching their 40th birthday in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-08. The age restriction may not apply if you are currently serving or have previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement (non-military) position covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title 5 U.S.C. 8412(d).

Firearm Requirement: This position requires that the incumbent meet initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, amended by the Lautenberg Amendment of 1996. An applicant whose background includes any of the following will be ineligible for consideration: 1) convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment exceeding one year; 2) has any outstanding warrants or is a fugitive from justice; 3) unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance; 4) adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to a mental institution; 5) illegally or unlawfully in the United States; 6) renounced U. S. citizenship; 7) subject to a court-ordered restraining (protection) order from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner (spouse, former spouse, parent of applicant's child, individual who cohabitates or has cohabitated with the applicant), or child; or 8) convicted under Federal, State, or Tribal Court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence against an intimate partner or child.

Additional information

Driver's License: You must possess the ability to operate a Government Owned Vehicle. A valid driver's license is required. Any legal restrictions on a driver's license are not acceptable.

Misdemeanor Crime of Domestic Violence: The CBP Officer position is a weapons-carrying position. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition. The CBP Officer Entrance Examination consists of three parts: 1) the Candidate Experience Record; a short online questionnaire 2) the Writing Skills Test; Part 2 of the Entrance Exam and 3) the Logical Reasoning exam taken at a local testing center. To be eligible, applicants must pass the entrance examination with a score of at least 70. Proper test preparation is essential for the successful candidate; therefore, we strongly encourage you to review the CBP Officer Study Guides and take the CBP Officer Entrance Exam Pre-Test. The pre-test is a preview of the types of questions you can expect to see on the actual exam.

A passing score does not guarantee selection. If you take and fail the exam, you will need to wait three (3) months from the date you failed the exam until you can retest.

Applicants will be referred for selection consideration throughout the announcement open period as they successfully complete the entrance exam and meet minimum qualifications.

If you pass the entrance exam and meet minimum qualifications, you will be placed in one of the following categories for referral and consideration:

Next steps

A new entrance examination went into effect February 1, 2024. All eligible applicants will be required to complete the new entrance examination.

Once you submit your application, you will receive an email from CBPEntry_Support@talogy.com with a link to create an account to access the online assessment, which takes approximately 1 hour. You must complete this portion of the exam on a personal computer within 48 hours of receipt of the email.

After completion of the initial online assessment, you will receive an email from CBPEntry_Support@talogy.com to complete the Writing Skills Test. You must complete this portion of the exam on a personal computer within 5 days after receiving the email.

Upon successful completion of the Writing Skills Test you may receive a final email from CBPEntry_Support@talogy.com to schedule the proctored exam at a local testing center. You will have 14 days to schedule and complete the proctored exam at a local testing center. Please be sure to check your email, spam, and junk folders daily. Scheduling the proctored exam as soon as possible will ensure the most options for testing. Please allow approximately 4 hours to complete the exam.

If you meet the qualifications for this position and have a passing score, you will be considered for future openings in "category order" in accordance with Veterans' Preference regulations.
