The Assistant Chief of the Dental Service provides quality patient care in collaboration with other health care professionals. The duties will include direct patient care with the balance as administrative. The incumbent will perform specific duties within his/her approved scope of practice. The Dentist will provide dental screenings, cleanings, X-rays, and fillings. He/She will also provide specialty dental procedures like periodontal care removable and fixed prosthetics including implant restoration.
Clinical Duties(75-80%):
Providing direct patient care and serve as clinical attending dentist, consistent with his/her clinical privileges. Clinical duties inclusive of supervision of the dental staff at Southeast Louisiana Healthcare System
The scope of care, generally, include:
· Oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity.
· Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions.
· Perform routine restoration of teeth.
· Perform routine extractions of teeth.
· Perform alveoloplasty and other routine surgical procedures.
· Perform prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns, and fixed bridge work.
· Perform routine endodontic procedures.
· Perform routine periodontal procedures
Other duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· Preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases, injuries and malformation of the teeth, jaws and the oral cavity and its adjacent tissues and structures.
· Responsible for the supervision, administrative management, and direction of the staff dentists. Typical duties include, but not limited to:
- Making work assignments
- Monitoring staff dentists' clinical performance and productivity
- Conducting performance appraisals
- Performing clinical and administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Service Chief.
· Assists with for Patient Advocate concerns
· Provides mentoring and supervision for dental resident program candidates
· Reports to the Dental Service Chief
· Assists with oversight of Care in the Community/consultation review process
· Delegation of Authorization to verify and approve Dental consults
· Responsible for overseeing dental provider's clinic coverage at local service level
· Orienting and providing in-service training and education of all persons in the Service in collaboration with staff of other services.
Serves as a project lead to enhance access to care, modernize clinics and achieve goals in alignment with the facility's goals.
Assists with recommending staffing, space, equipment, and other resources needed by the Service, based on data. Interacts with VA staff, VA Office of Dentistry, affiliated institutions and Veterans.
Work Schedule: 7:30-4:00 Monday through Friday. (other times as required) Subject to change based on agency needs.
