Summary

The incumbent serves as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI) for the Imaging Service at the VHA WNY HCS. Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists complete assignments in specialized areas that include general diagnostic radiologic technology (R) (to include general OR procedures and Fluoroscopy studies), mammography (M), diagnostic ultrasound (S), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MR), interventional radiologic technology (IR).

Duties

General Radiologic Technology -DRTs perform procedures and examinations in hospitals or clinics under the direction of Lead Technologists and Imaging Manager. The objective of the examinations and procedures is to produce radiographic studies that are used in medical diagnosis and interpreted by radiologists to locate injuries, foreign bodies, pathological conditions, or lesions within the body. They prepare and administer contrast media and medications in accordance with Federal regulations. All DRTs must be knowledgeable in computerized [and digital radiography (CR/DR),] and picture archiving and communications systems (PACS).

Magnetic Resonance Imaging- This specialty modality requires additional knowledge of superconducting magnets, the physics of superconducting magnets, and how they relate to the human anatomy in medical imaging. The technologist must be educated in the safety factors governing a magnetic environment that patients, visitors, and equipment enter. The technologist must have specialized knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and how it relates to the soft tissues and vessels of the human body. The technologist must also have specialized knowledge in the radio-frequency surface coils required for each specific anatomical area to be imaged. The technologist assigned to this specialty performs MRI imaging of the peripheral and visceral vessels through MR Angiography of the abdominal systems and extremities. These MR angiographic studies include renal, hepatic, mesenteric, aortic, femoral, etc. The exams involve the use of highly sophisticated equipment, such as pressure injectors and 3D Reconstruction Software This assignment may also perform basic magnetic resonance safety program duties. Technologist participates is quarterly MRI Safety meetings and is competent
and educated in all MRI service policies pertaining to the technologist and their assigned work section and acknowledges the receipt and understanding of these policies by signing the supervisory copy of the policy. Technologists must be knowledgeable in contrast media and maintain competence with power injectors, venipuncture, I stat procedures, and PACS. The technologist works with MRI schedule to assure timely accomplishment of assigned workload, making day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities and additional assignments. Optimizes scan times while maintaining flexibility for emergent cases. This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate the emergent patient and
Maximize patient throughput by contacts with escort, ward secretaries, nursing personnel, etc. The technologist applies Infection Control practices and procedures for patients and staff, as mandated by the Medical Center and Radiology Service Infection Control policies. Applies safety procedures for self, patients and others as mandated by Radiology Service Safety policies for all imaging modalities. Properly operates all electrical and mechanical equipment, is cognizant of basic safety practices related to the use of the assigned equipment. Adheres to hospital infection control and safety policies/techniques with emphasis on sterile technique; the storage of sterile supplies; the disposal of body fluids and 'sharps'; proper attire; hand washing practices; and continuing education DRT assignments that include performance of independent duties in this subspecialty require advanced ARRT (MR) certification.

Quality and Safety for Imaging- The technologist performs daily inspection of radiographic units to ensure proper mechanical functionality as assigned by leadership. The technologists must be aware of and practice the safety policies and procedures of the Medical Center and participate in quality assurance activities as directed. Technologist must report equipment malfunction in a timely manner through the vhabuf 114 equipment email
group or nursing supervisor on non- administrative hours if patient care is impacted, so as proper attention is ensured to maintain the integrity of the equipment.

The technologist complies with all safety/fire prevention rules/regulations, using protective equipment when required and provided. Promptly reports all accidents and notifies supervisor of unsafe/unhealthful conditions in the workplace. Attends scheduled training sessions and participates in facility or service-level safety promotions as directed by supervisor. Knows fire drill and emergency plans for work area, including location of all emergency fire equipment.

Technologist uses word processing software to execute several office automations functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files; activating printers; inserting and deleting text, formatting letters, reports, and memoranda; and transmitting and receiving e-mail through Microsoft Outlook.

The technologist maintains electronic records and files of exams performed on patients where applicable.

Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-9

Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.

Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments:

Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

*Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health
care providers.

*Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.

*Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.

*Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.

*Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

For a GS-9 Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT), both an education (Associate's/Bachelor's) and specialized experience, plus current ARRT certification (R), with VA emphasizing additional certifications (CT, MRI, Mammography) for complex duties, requiring knowledge of advanced positioning, anatomy, and patient care, often exceeding basic levels by demonstrating independent, complex exam performance, fulfilling OPM standards for the 0647 series.
