Summary

The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) - Computer Tomography (CT) position is assigned to the Diagnostic Imaging Service, General Radiology section. This is a general medical and surgical facility, classified as a Level 2 facility. In addition to the main facility in Lebanon, PA, services offered in five community-based outpatient clinics (York, Mechanicsburg, Berks, Lancaster, Schuylkill).

Duties

The DRT - CT at this level is fully functional as a DRT - CT and can carry out the assigned tasks independently. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. The DRT - CT will have a varying assignment including special and complex radiographic examinations and procedures within the General Radiology section, with and without the use of contrast materials. The objective of these exams and procedures is to produce radiographic studies which are used in medical diagnosis and interpreted by Radiologists to locate injuries, foreign bodies, pathological conditions or lesions within the body so that proper diagnosis and treatment may be obtained.

Major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Accurately operates a wide variety of imaging equipment to obtain examinations of acceptable quality. This includes but is not limited to: Fluoroscopic and General Diagnostic exams, Portable Radiography, Portable Fluoroscopy, Operating Room and all other duties assigned.
  • Prepares contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist for the purpose of performing exams requiring injectable or consumable solutions such as UGI's, BE's, Small Bowel, Modified Barium Swallows, Venograms, Cystograms, Cholangiograms, Fistulagrams, Arthrography, etc. Improper use or administration of contrast materials runs the risk of patient mortality and, therefore, it is essential that a thorough understanding of the contrast material usage is possessed by those who prepare it. In addition, the technologist must be continuously alerted to the patient's condition and other disorders. Reactions on the part of the patient require immediate attention so that harm does not come to the patient.
  • Technologists must be familiar with policies and procedures for practicing radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. This is achieved by optimizing technical factors and ensuring all policies and procedures are adhered to. Employees must also implement the use of lead aprons, lead gloves, and lead shields. Film badges are worn by the technologists and exchanged in a timely manner, which is in compliance with radiation regulations. Adheres to Radiation Safety guidelines, properly determines applying technical factors to ensure ALARA dose optimization, positioning, required views, etc. to produce and satisfy requirements for diagnostic imaging.
  • Records all doses of radiation for fluoroscopy and portable fluoroscopy exams in the technologist comment section in Vista and/or by generating and sending the dose summary report from the fluoroscopy equipment.
  • Technologists receive and interpret all radiology requests for accuracy, appropriateness; date desired and maintain a thorough knowledge of the ordering process in CPRS. Thoroughly reviews the radiology order screening information for accuracy, noting and researching all questionable information prior to contacting the patient or performing the exam. Inputs pertinent information into the designated computer systems and has knowledge to register, complete, cancel and edit exams.
  • Performs and completes imaging studies within the established guidelines for start, pre-op, urgent and routine exams.
  • Responsible for the quality of radiographic exams performed to assure a high level of acceptability of radiographs while minimizing patient dosage and reducing costs.
  • Responsible for operating and maximizing utilization of all equipment. Independently identifies, performs and completes active radiologic exams. Coordinates examinations that require radiologist direction around physician availability, maximizing exam room effectiveness. Independently identifies, performs and completes inpatient radiology exams whenever possible, to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment for hospitalized patients.
  • Technologists work with staff and radiology schedules to assure timely accomplishment of assigned workload, making day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities and additional assignments. Optimizes appointment times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases. This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate the emergency patient.
  • Performs radiology procedures/exams utilizing sterile techniques. This requires proper preparation of sterile trays, proper labeling of medications dispensed to sterile trays, knowledge of supplies and specific locations, and assuring measures have been taken to prevent contamination of the patient and equipment.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Note: For grade levels above the entry level, the candidate must be certified.
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the 2 equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE)
  • Credentialing Standards: Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Computed Tomography) GS-09


This specialty modality requires specific knowledge of cross sectional human anatomy and its application in spiral, and/or, multi-slice computer tomography, inclusive of 3-D reconstruction scans, including drainages, biopsies, and peripheral vascular examinations. The technologist requires specific knowledge and training in the location, appearance, and function of the various major and minor systems susceptible to radiological illumination; to interpret the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and inter-relationship of the various organs; to use methods and techniques which will identify organs appearing on the digital display monitor, or on film, and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the image and/or scan for diagnostic use and to emphasize the aspects of interest to the physician. DRT assignments that include performance of independent duties in this subspecialty require advanced ARRT certification.

Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, you must have at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-08, that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Examples of experience at the GS-8 level include but are not limited to: Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines; Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed; Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results; Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed; Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers; and Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.

Employees at the GS-9 level are fully functional as an advanced DRT - CT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated below.
  • Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
  • Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
  • Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
  • Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.
  • Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
