Summary

This position is located within the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, Division of Clinical Services, Diagnostic Imaging Section. The primary purpose of this position is to perform technical operations of Computerized Radiography equipment by providing x-ray studies for diagnosis and treatment of patients in localization of foreign bodies, disorders of gastrointestinal systems, kidneys or accident trauma.

Duties

  • Performs computerized radiography equipment operates teleradiology equipment and PAC's equipment and all standard diagnostic x-ray procedures.
  • Advises radiologist or referring physician of results of examination.
  • Performs preventive maintenance as required.
  • Operates x-ray film processing machines.
  • Provides proper patient protection in accordance with prescribed safety standards related to radiographic examinations.
  • Monitors vital signs and notifies senior Technologist of any significant changes as required by procedure
  • Interprets requests and/or procedure.
  • Positions or places body of patient in required position to obtain views.
  • Determines technical factors by setting controls and operating radiographic equipment.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (l) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements:
(l) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.
(2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency.
In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Specialized Experience
For positions at GS-4 and above: Experience in the operation of diagnostic radiology equipment under the direction of radiologists or other medical officers to produce radiographic studies used in medical diagnosis and treatment.
OR
Education and Training: Qualifying educational programs for radiography and radiation therapy technology are available in accredited colleges, universities, hospitals, medical schools, or postsecondary technical or vocational schools. Education or training from programs based in hospitals must have been from those hospitals that were accredited at the time of the education or training by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals or by the American Osteopathic Association.
For GS-5:
  • 1 year experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing routine diagnostic radiographic procedures. My experience included producing digital images of routine views of the body (i.e., chest, joints, feet, hands, long bones of arms and legs) under general supervision of a Radiologist.
  • Successful completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months' duration in a post-high school radiography program.
  • Successful completion of a course for medical radiologic technicians in the Armed Forces is qualifying on a month-for-month basis up to the l year of specialized experience required for GS-5.
  • Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with courses in radiography, radiation therapy technology, or other related radiographic studies attained from an accredited college, university, medical school, or post- secondary technical or vocational school.
  • combination of experience (described in option A above) and education (as described in option D above) that when combined meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your total number of months experience by 12 (months). To calculate your percentage of education, divide your undergraduate hours earned by 120 (semester hours or 180 quarter hours).
For GS-06:
  • 1 year of specialized experience to at least the next lower grade level, examples include: Perform a variety of radiographic examinations; Receive patient, explain method of procedure, position patient, select and set technical factors, set up and adjust accessory equipment required, and make exposures necessary for the requested procedure; Perform procedures such as cholangiography, linear tomography, xerographic mammography, lumbar and thoracic myelography, bronchography, lymphangiography, or femoral arteriography; Set up the X-ray room; Assure that sterile supplies, contrast materials, catheters, or other required equipment are present and laid out; Prepare and administer contrast material orally, by enema, or, under close control of radiologist, intravenously; As required by procedure or patient's condition, monitor vital signs such as heart beat and blood pressure and notify radiologist of significant changes; Perform examinations of head, trunk, and extremities for routine physical examinations and for diagnosis of illness or of injuries of accident victims; Assist radiologists and higher grade technologists to perform more complex procedures such as carotid arteriograms.
For GS-07:
  • 1 year of specialized experience to at least the next lower grade level, examples include: Perform a variety of difficult radiographic examinations; independently make routine radiographic examinations of head, truck and extremities for diagnosis of illness or injuries; perform procedures as a team member, with a radiologist, such a bronchograms, cholecysteograms, cholangiograms, urethrograms, G.I. series, and barium and air contrast barium enemas; set up the ex-ray room, assure sterile supplies, local anesthetics, contrast materials, catheters and other required equipment are present and laid out; prepare and administer contrast material; schedule patients for examinations; maintain logs of patients and procedures used; prepare file jackets on patient x-rays; requisition supplies; clean, oil, make minor repairs and adjustments to x-ray equipment, accessories and automatic film processing machine; operate film processing machines; review new developments in the field and recommends to the head of the clinic adoption of those which would improve the operation of the radiology section.
  • Successful completion of one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education directly related to the work of the position.
  • A combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-07 grade level.
For GS-08:
  • 1 year of specialized experience to at least the next lower grade level, examples include: Perform computerized axial tomographic scanning of head and/or bodies; confer with radiologist to establish requirements of standard examinations and determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness cut of scans, etc., to satisfy requirement; advises radiologist or referring physician of results of examination, provide preliminary diagnostic evaluation, notifies radiologist or referring physician of significant scans requiring their immediate attention and visualization while patient is undergoing examination; prepare contrast material under the direction of radiologist for purpose of performing procedure/exams requiring injectable solutions such as IVP, cystograms, cholangiograms, fistula grams, arthrograms and myelogram.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
