Duties
The incumbent has full responsibility for administering all aspects of a VA sponsored, accredited dietetic internship program which includes the overall planning, directing, administering of the accredited post-baccalaureate degree dietetic internship at a medical center, and ensure eligibility requirements an accreditation standard of ACEND are met. Individuals serves as a consult within NFS and with other health care staff regarding current nutrition and food service systems management issues, evaluating health care delivery to patients and designing nutrition related research initiatives. The DI Director provides professional and administrative guidance to dietetic interns and surveillance of all aspects of the program and is responsible for development of a performance evaluation system, selection or appointment of dietetic interns, identification of education and training needs and performance issue. The DI Director may have other responsibilities that do not compromise the ability to management the program. Approximately 60-75% of the DI's time will be devoted to the responsibilities and management of the internship program. In addition, the DI director will also provide oversight to affiliated dietetic internship and dietetic technician internship programs within the community. Oversight will include coordinating the placement of scheduled rotations and serve as a site representative for the interview committee.
- Able to develop, maintain and supervise a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies to assures compliance with various accrediting, regulatory, and agency authorities. Also, be able to manage and establish program goals and objectives, plan and administer a program, coordinate practice experience at affiliated sites, evaluate program accomplishments, redefine priorities, solve problems, modify objectives, and review activities of preceptors and interns.
- Knowledge on principles of program management and oversight required to develop program goals and objectives, administer and monitor program, evaluate program outcomes/accomplishments, set and redefine priorities and implement effective solutions in processes/systems as needed.
- Knowledge on human resources administration, including such functions as the ability to interview and select qualified applicants, and monitor and evaluate performance.
- Knowledge on designing dietetic internship curriculum to meet accreditation requirements established by the accrediting agency (ACEND) and VHA Office of Academic Affiliations.
- Has in-depth knowledge and maintains knowledge of current practice in food service systems management, nutrition therapy, community nutrition practice, and business/entrepreneurial dietetics within the ability to integrate learning experiences in didactic and practice components of the internship.
- Coordinates with affiliated program directors/coordinates on partnered affiliated dietetic internship and dietetic technician programs within the community for intern placement and schedule. Also, coordinates the rotations, schedules, seminars, workshops or prepares other assignments as needed to ensure the program meets accreditation requirements, facility or service level requirements.
- Works closely with other established VHA DI Directors to coordinate education efforts throughout VHA.
- Issues ACEND verification statements to students who successfully complete the program allowing them to be eligible to apply for writing the registration exam and notifies CDE of student eligibility and maintenance of required records.
- Review and evaluates all application packets for presentation to established selection committee for each cohort group. Supports affiliated program interview panels with dietetic internship programs.
- Supports facility and service-level initiatives by participating in the development of nutritional care indicators, evaluation criteria, collecting continuous quality improvement data, monitoring outcomes and initiating corrective actions. Participates in the lean methodology approaches to improve processes within the service.
- Stays abreast with current food and dietetic related areas. Analyzes, interprets and collaborates efforts to research initiatives.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- English Language Proficiency: Dietitians must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
- Registration/Certification: (1) All applicants must hold the RDN credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.
Dietitian (Dietetic Internship Director), GS-12.
(1) Experience. Three years of experience post registration.
(2) Education. Master's degree or higher from an accredited university or college.
(3) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
(a) Skill in utilizing data for program improvement to ensure compliance with various accrediting, regulatory and agency authorities.
(b) Ability to coordinate class schedules, training activities, seminars and supervised practice experience within the health care system and affiliated sites.
(c) Ability to implement all aspects of an internship program including developing program goals and objectives, curriculum and policies and procedures to ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements.
(d) Ability to oversee the process for the selection of students for the internship program.
(e) Ability to evaluate progress towards meeting core competencies.
