Duties

  • Assumes responsibility for the operation and efficiency of the dredge's electrical systems and components.
  • Follows the plans and instructions laid out by the First Assistant Engineer or in his absence the Chief Engineer or Senior Engineer on board and is responsible for coping with unanticipated or emergency situations on their own
  • Makes scheduled and special operational checks of equipment. Observes gauges, listens, notes unusual conditions (heating, oil or grease loss, loose fittings, broken or inoperative units, etc.) and makes repairs or adjustments as required
  • Makes periodic or special preventative maintenance checks of units. Tests, dismantles, observes, replaces scheduled or work elements, lubricates, packs, repairs, etc., as indicated
  • Installs replacement or new equipment (floodlights, signals, fixtures, etc.) Repairs or participates in the repair of any electrical unit on board (motors, pumps, generators, control panels, special equipment, etc.)
  • Itemizes materials and parts used. Orders items that are readily available in quantities relevant to expectation of consumption. Maintains labeling and organization of spare parts storerooms and their contents. Changes instrument charts.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess active U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Credential Endorsed as an Electrician.
  • Must possess a valid Transportation Worker's Identification Card.
  • Must be able to take and pass a pre-employment physical and one annually thereafter.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Must be willing to take and pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and must be willing and able to pass random drug and alcohol tests thereafter.
  • TDY: up to 5% of business-related TDY travel required.
  • Regular tour of duty is 15 consecutive workdays, followed by 13 days off. Schedule tour of duty will require evenings, weekends and holiday work hours.
  • Residence on aboard the dredge during the work period is a requirement.
  • Must possess a degree from a trade school
  • Must possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) endorsed Able Seaman limited or unlimited or higher
  • Must possess a valid Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Must possess a(n) endorsement as Qualified Member of the Engine Department as an Electrician

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Marine Machinery Mechanic (Drag Tender) without more than normal supervision. Your resume must demonstrate that you have the ability to repair and maintain marine equipment such as valves, motors and winches by using hand and power tools along with measuring devices - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Efforts:
Work requires considerable standing, climbing, stooping, and bending, all which can cause exertion of the lower back and extremities. Work on ladders requires incumbent to work overhead or in a stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. May lift and carry items weighing approximately 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Works inside or outside. Is subject to intermittent exposure to heat, cold, excessive noise, rain, and wind; falls from ladders, steps, and slippery decks in foul weather. Is exposed to eye hazards while engaged in chipping paint. Is subject to some danger of drowning in case of accident. Subject to cuts from hand or powered tools and danger from flying splinters and chips. Subject to dust, grease, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces. Due to the age of the vessel, the nature of some work activities require the use of protective clothing and equipment (e.g. rubber boots, coveralls, goggles, aprons, gloves, respirator, etc.) as situations warrant. The use of respirator (e.g. full face, half-face canister, N95) is required while performing some work activities to minimize the risk of exposure to chemical fumes, dust, lead paint, and/or asbestos.
