Summary

About the Position: At the full performance level this position assists planning, design, and construction engineers by acquiring, developing, and converting various engineering and technical data and measurements into forms useable by the engineers, through use of computer aided Design and Drafting (CADD) techniques. May be selected at any grade with promotion potential to GS-11

Duties

  • Uses CADD system to create, modify, delete, transfer, copy, store, graphic files in the preparation of project drawings and other related data.
  • Coordinates with the engineers or technicians responsible for the project on the intent of the various aspects of work to ensure that final drawings furnish the construction details needed for the project.
  • Determines the most effective CADD presentation of the design data to clarify and portray as intended. Provides advice concerning support capabilities of specific software programs.
  • Develops, maintains and uses a thorough background knowledge of CADD system operation and maintenance requirements.
  • Consults with project leaders to assure detailing of data is compatible with the specifications being written and to furnish information thereto for coverage in the specifications.
  • Maintains flow and quality of work to assure timely accomplishment of assigned work and making day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities.
  • Prepare detailed designs/models for complex systems such as framing plans; grading plans (slope remediation/retaining structures) section views; boring logs, geologic cross sections and subsurface digital terrain models.
  • Furnish instructions and technical assistance to other technicians assigned for the preparation of drawings and the computation of quantity estimates.
  • Communicate with project managers and engineers to obtain needed technical and scheduling information and to plan and coordinate work efforts.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or specialized experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-04: Six months General experience including (1) any type of work which demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position; or (2) experience that provided knowledge in performing drafting assignments AND six months of specialized experience which includes making simple text edits on drawing sheets from red-line marks under closer than normal supervision. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).
OR
Education: Two years of education above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.

GS-05: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: creating drawings; developing civil and/or structural, topographical features of locks, dams, or other similar infrastructure; knowledge and training in utilizing software such as MicroStation and AutoCAD to create models, site plans, cross sections, elevations and details. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; OR (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

GS-06: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: executing drawings; developing civil and/or structural, topographical features of locks, dams, or other similar infrastructure; knowledge in utilizing software such as MicroStation and AutoCAD to create models, site plans, cross sections, elevations and details. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

GS-07: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: executing and reviewing drawings; developing civil and/or structural, topographical features of locks, dams, or other similar infrastructure; proficient knowledge in utilizing software such as MicroStation and AutoCAD to create models, site plans, cross sections, elevations and details. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

GS-08: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: executing and reviewing drawings; developing civil and/or structural, topographical features of locks, dams, or other similar infrastructure; experience in utilizing software such as MicroStation and AutoCAD to create models, site plans, cross sections, elevations and details. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

GS-09: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: executing and reviewing complex and unusual drawings; developing civil and/or structural, topographical features of locks, dams, or other similar infrastructure; expert experience in utilizing software such as MicroStation and AutoCAD to create models, site plans, cross sections, elevations and details. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, at the GS-06 through the GS-09 grade levels, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
