Duties

  • Plans, implements and administers the Education and Career Program, and counsels units, military members, family members, retirees and Department of Defense (DoD) civilian members on issues including career and transition assistance, education and financial planning to support development and successful execution of individual road. Maps for military career planning, reintegration to civilian society and successful career development. 
  • Provides educational, vocational and financial counseling to individuals and organizations to promote academic, career, personal and social development of authorized patrons. Assists Marines and families in identifying and evaluating abilities, interests, talents and personalities to develop realistic academic and career goals that are supported by appropriate financial plans to achieve success. Evaluates and interprets data to identify and clarify issues and concerns, and appropriate course of action to positively affect work/life relationships, mission readiness and recruitment and retention. 
  • Conducts individual interviews, counseling sessions and interest and aptitude assessment tests to evaluate and advise students. Operates career information centers and provides expertise and assistance in career and education programs. 
  • Assists Marines and families in addressing problems and concerns with academics and special needs. Advises Marines and families on subjects such as: college majors, college admission requirements, entrance exams, financial aid, trade or technical school opportunities and apprenticeship programs.  Assists Marines and their families in developing job search skills such as resume writing and interviewing techniques. Assists Veteran Marines and active duty/reserve members in developing college career plans and acquiring good job hunting techniques to pursue successful careers. 
  • Using an outreach approach links Marines, eligible family members and patrons to a variety of support services and resources at the command when work/life problems interfere with a positive environment for self-reliance and successful career development. 
  • Conducts classes and presents self-help or informational sessions on subjects related to education, career planning, and financial aid. Attends professional meetings, education conferences and training workshops as required to maintain and improve professional competence.  Assesses needs for assistance in rehabilitation, financial aid or additional/remedial training. Compiles and studies occupational, education and economic information to support quality service delivery. Reviews transcripts and ensures students meet graduation or college entrance requirements. Writes letters of recommendation.  Identifies barriers to employment. Establishes and supervises peer counseling and peer tutoring programs. Refers qualified counselees to employers or employment services for job placement. Sponsors extracurricular activities such as networking fairs and events or job fairs. 
  • Provides counseling on Montgomery GI Bill, Post 9/11 Bill, Marine Coq>s Apprenticeship Programs, testing, etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field appropriate to the work of the position and three years of experience in the occupation, or a related field or work area, OR an appropriate combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of knowledge and skill equivalent to that gained in the above, OR appropriate experience that demonstrates that the applicant has acquired the knowledge, skills, and abilities equivalent to that gained in the above. 
  • Knowledge of one or more of the social or behavioral sciences and human resources. Skill in interviewing and counseling to enable clients with a wide variety of vocational, educational, and disability problems and concerns to receive, assimilate, and make realistic career, transition, life and work choices. Knowledge of human behavior as it relates to performance, individual differences in ability, personality, interests, learning and motivation. 
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships using tact, diplomacy, and overall professionalism. Ability to operate a personal computer, printer, etc. and current knowledge in using various office computer programs and software applications. Ability to collect, evaluate and disseminate information on trends, concerns, and needs of related organizations and other populations to identify priorities and goals. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
