The Electrician is in the Electric Control / Repair Shop which is part of the Engineering Service with Facilities Management located at the James Mountain Inhofe VA Medical Center, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

ALL US CITIZENS DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.201) for this occupation. This is an open continuous announcement. Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Knowledge of various electrical systems, circuits, equipment and control installation, composition, operation and inter-relationships, e.g., wiring systems, power/control circuits, distribution panels, etc.; various equipment, gauges, sizes and types of wire, conduit, couplings , fittings, relays , boxes, circuit breakers , electrical supplies/devices and ability to integrate systems and equipment maintained to ensure proper and safe operation.
  • Knowledge of construction, function, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance procedures/practices for moderate , low speed, moderate speed converted to high speed and high speed elevator operational systems, dumbwaiter, leveling ramp and associated equipment to solve operating problems; varied high speed elevator electronic control circuits and component s e.g., electrolytic condensers , transistors , potentiometers , etc., moderate, low-speed elevator systems, dumbwaiter and leveling ramp dispatching-scheduling systems; system components.
  • Utilizing a highly developed knowledge of electrical principles, theories, methods, procedures and system operations; design, principles, and operating characteristics of varied electrical, mechanical, office, medical, industrial and hospital equipment, machines and appliances; and construction, functions, and maintenance/service practices of low, moderate, conversion from moderate to high speed and high speed elevator systems, dumbwaiter and leveling ramp and other trade practices.
  • Determines, arranges, places and routes distribution panels, boxes, circuits, fittings, connections, and controls, to include wiring, conduit, fixtures, transformers, and other electrical device installations.
  • Ability to interpret manufacturer parts, catalogs and repair manuals to trace circuits, replace/fabricate parts and complete repairs; use test equipment to check out electrical circuits/components and precision measuring devices and repair electrical connections.
  • Skill and ability in planning and carrying out troubleshooting, aligning/balancing control networks, adjusting/resetting safety devices, repairing/servicing electromechanical parts and equipment; dismantle operational assemblies.
  • Installs, tests, troubleshoots, modifies, connects, repairs, and maintains the Medical Center's self-contained high voltage underground primary electrical distribution systems and lines.
  • Services complex to difficult fire alarm system containing, annunciation, monitoring of devices, such as smoke detectors, fire sprinklers and fire alarm pull boxes.
  • Cleans, adjusts, and repairs electrical equipment, e.g., air circuit breakers, remotely controlled supervisory equipment, etc. Constructs and installs rigid conduits; pulls in conductors, assembles bus bars, phases out and connects conductors; splices cables and seals connections.
  • Installs, modifies, repairs, loads, and tests secondary electrical systems and circuits. Installs, modifies, repairs, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs computerized fire alarm system.
  • Installs new pull stations, flow switches, smoke detectors, heat detectors, and tamper switches.
  • Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, electrical maintenance/repair manuals in planning and laying out routing.
  • Skill and ability to use varied hand/power tools and primary/secondary electrical, elevator system and machine/appliance test equipment.
  • Plans and lays out complex and unique work, plans work sequences and selects tools/materials or equipment to complete assignments.
  • They are responsible for use/safeĀ­keeping of tools, materials and equipment. Work is subject to spot check during progress and/or upon completion for compliance with instructions or safety checks; completes assignments with little or no technical assistance during progress or upon completion; supervisor checks overall. work for compliance with accepted trade standards, practices and/or regulatory code requirements.
  • Troubleshoots systems tracing hard-to-locate defects or problems; completes repair, maintenance and/or modification with minimal supervisory intervention.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside (heat, cold, under and outside of buildings). Installation, inspections, and repairs are made under dirty, noisy and odor producing conditions. He / She is frequently exposed to the danger of strains, cuts, bruises, burns and infections.

Physical Requirements: Work requires frequently handling heavy materials and parts weighing in excess of 45 pounds. The work also requires pulling, pushing, reaching, walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending, and climbing for sustained periods of time. Physical effort is often strenuous and is typical of industrial construction trades.
