Duties
The incumbent is assigned a wide variety of duties of a journeyman electrician involving installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, loading new and existing electrical lines, preventive maintenance and testing of complex electrical systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, and lighting fixtures.
The incumbent performs maintenance and repairs to electrical equipment including, but not limited to, transformers, feeders, motors, generators, starters, automatic transfer switches (ATS), overload and over current protectors and controllers. The incumbent must be able to troubleshoot and maintain electric and electronic control circuits on various equipment including, but not limited to, laundry equipment and dietetic equipment.
The incumbent must have the ability to select proper wire gauges, insulation, protective devices and switching for a variety of equipment, lighting and miscellaneous electrical loads. The incumbent must be able to balance service loads over three phases. The incumbent must have the ability to properly calculate loads for feeders, branch circuits, and panel boards. The incumbent must be able to pull conductors through raceway systems, phase out and make connections.
The incumbent works from building plans, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. The incumbent determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and installs wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers, and other electrical devices.
The incumbent plans and lays out work, tracing hard-to-locate defects or problems and completes repairs and installations with little or no advice.
Incumbent must meet the needs of customers while supporting the VA mission. Consistently communicates and treats customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful and respectful manner. The incumbent provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately. Incumbent is responsible for the observance of station fire and safety regulations.

Physical Requirements: Work involves difficult repetitive actions, and responsibility for a variety of different operations and machines to complete assignments. Work is complex and requires a high degree of accuracy and precision. Work assignments involve a high degree of care and skill to prevent damage to tools and materials, and injury to others. Skill in specific trade operations and the degree of manual dexterity or precision is required. Incumbent shall be physically fit and mentally alert at all times. Mental abilities are needed, such as memory, judgment, and ingenuity. Mental application is required (e.g., in planning and laying out work, in maintaining alertness and concentrated attention, or because of the nature of muscular and visual coordination needed). The position requires walking, running, climbing, crawling, lifting, kneeling, bending, squatting, carrying, reaching over/under; and pulling, pushing, and steadying objects of varying weights, sizes, and shapes. Strain related to lack of movement such as standing in place, crouching, or stooping for extended periods of time. Work may require working in confined spaces such as manholes, vaults, building basements and crawl spaces. Works on equipment while in cramped or awkward position. Incumbent must works off ladders, scaffolds and platforms and must be able to carry items that weight up to 50 pounds.
