Summary
The position is in the Electric Shop, Facilities Management Service (FMS) and works under the direct supervision of the Electric Shop Supervisor. The primary purpose of the position involves maintaining, installing, modifying, repairing, and troubleshooting electrical systems and electrical, office and environmental management equipment within the Chillicothe VA Medical Center and 6 offsite Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC).
Duties
This position is responsible for installing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and testing, new and existing electrical wires, circuits, systems and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment.
- Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls.
- Interprets basic electronic terms and symbols when reading technical/system diagrams and schematics;
- Applies a variety of electrical formulas, tables, charts, and color codes in order to mount, ground and install wiring and equipment for electrical/electronic systems;
- Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings and connections, and installs wiring couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices;
- Inspects electrical components, such as transformers and circuit breakers;
- Identifies electrical problems using a variety of testing devices;
- Interprets and applies state and local building regulations based on the National Electrical Code;
- Traces hard-to-locate defects or problems associated with the completion of repairs and installations;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: Repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires electrical workers to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Electrical workers frequently lift and carry tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 9 kilograms (20 pounds) and, less often, up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Occasionally, they lift or move with assistance moderately heavy objects weighing more than 18 kilograms.
