Summary

As an Electronic Integrated Systems Mechanic (Meter&Relay) Craftsman-In-Training, you will be maintaining, repairing, modifying, installing and commissioning power system substation protection control and metering equipment.

**This is not a remote position. The selectee will be required to be physically present at one of the duty location(s) identified.**

Duties

As an Electronic Integrated Systems Mechanic (Meter and Relay), Craftsman-in-Training, some of your duties will include:

  • Maintain, repair, modify, program, install and commission power system substation protection control, monitoring and metering equipment.
  • Maintain, repair, install, program, and test control equipment used in controlling substation equipment. This includes human/machine interfaces (HMI), and communication processors.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with DOE and WAPA orders, WAPA's Power System Safety rules, and WAPA's safe clearance procedures. Recognize safety hazards and unsafe conditions, and initiate action to alleviate or eliminate hazards. Participate in job planning and jobsite tailboard discussions.
  • Maintain, repair, modify, program, install and commission power system substation protection control, monitoring and metering equipment.
  • Maintain, repair, install, program, and test protective relay equipment including current, voltage, differential, reclosing, timing, auxiliary, ground detection, and complex impedance relays of the electromechanical, electronic and microprocessor types.
  • Develop software test routines for protective relays.
The standard length of time in the program for each trainee is two (2) years. The 2-year program consists of four levels, with 6 months at each level.

  • I understand the wear of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Arc Rated protective clothing when in proximity to exposed energized circuits is required.
  • I understand I may be required to work during inclement weather conditions such as high temperatures, rain, sleet, snow, and extreme cold.
  • I understand I may be required to lift and carry loads over 50 pounds often in outdoor environments that pose difficult terrain issues.
  • I understand I may be required to work in close and restricted quarters and standing, bending, stooping for long periods of time.
  • I understand frequent travel may be required annually with overnight travel as required to perform the duties of the position.

  • Completed a 4-year apprentice program in a related craft; OR
  • Employment as a Western Area Power Administration journeyman in the craft occupations (i.e. in the "WB" pay plan); OR
  • Hold, or have held, the journeyman level (i.e., a level achieved by at least 4 years of training) in a related craft.

NOTE: If you completed a formal apprenticeship program, please include the certification, name of the granting institution, the date completed, and a contact name and telephone number for verification purposes.

Examples of related craft areas include: Distribution Electrician, Military Electrician, Commercial/industrial electrician for a utility, Distribution Lineman, Construction Electrician, Construction Electrical Inspector

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: May lift and carry loads over 50 pounds, often in outdoor environments that pose difficult terrain issues. May work in close, restricted quarters. Standing, bending, stooping for long periods of time may be required.

WORK CONDITIONS: Work is indoors; however, outdoor activities are frequently encountered. Work is on or around energized sources. Work often requires much driving, often alone and in adverse weather conditions. Work can require considerable travel requiring temporary lodging away from duty station. May be required to travel in a fixed wing aircraft, helicopter, snow mobile, or snow cat to work sites.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, no substitution of experience is allowed.
