Summary

As an Electronic Integrated Systems Mechanic (Meter&Relay) Journeyman, you will be maintaining, repairing, modifying, installing and commissioning power system substation protection control and metering equipment.

**This is not a remote position. The selectee will be required to be physically present at one of the duty location(s) identified.**

Duties

As an Electronic Integrated Systems Mechanic (Meter and Relay) Journeyman, some of your duties will include:

  • Maintain, repair, install, program, and test protective relay equipment including current, voltage, differential, reclosing, timing, auxiliary, ground detection, and complex impedance relays of the electromechanical, electronic and microprocessor types.
  • Develop software test routines for protective relays. Verify protective relay, transfer trip, and communication settings.
  • Maintain, repair, install, program, and test digital fault recording equipment.
  • Simulate line faults with test equipment to analyze distance relay operation and zone
  • characteristics.
  • Work from and interpret electrical drawings and electronic circuit diagrams. Install, align, calibrate, adjust and maintain equipment without endangering system operation.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with DOE and WAPA orders, WAPA's Power System Safety rules, and WAPA's safe clearance procedures. Recognize safety hazards and unsafe conditions, and initiate action to alleviate or eliminate hazards. Participate in job planning and jobsite tailboard discussions.

  • I understand the wear of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Arc Rated protective clothing when in proximity to exposed energized circuits is required.
  • I understand I may be required to work during inclement weather conditions such as high temperatures, rain, sleet, snow, and extreme cold.
  • I understand I may be required to lift and carry loads over 50 pounds often in outdoor environments that pose difficult terrain issues.
  • I understand I may be required to work in close and restricted quarters and standing, bending, stooping for long periods of time.
  • I understand frequent travel may be required annually with overnight travel as required to perform the duties of the position.

Qualifications: You must have journeyman-level ability in the duties of an Electronic Integrated Systems Mechanic (Meter&Relay) Journeyman. You must meet all the qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

Ability to do the work of an Electronic Integrated Systems Mechanic (Meter&Relay) Journeyman independently and without more than normal supervision to include maintaining, repairing, installing, programming, and testing protective relay equipment including current, voltage, differential, reclosing, timing, auxiliary, ground detection, and complex impedance relays of the electromechanical, electronic and microprocessor types.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: May lift and carry loads over 50 pounds, often in outdoor environments that pose difficult terrain
issues. May work in close, restricted quarters. Standing, bending, stooping for long periods of time may be required.

WORK CONDITIONS: Work is indoors; however, outdoor activities are frequently encountered. Work is on or around energized sources. Work often requires much driving, often alone and in adverse weather conditions. Work can require considerable travel requiring temporary lodging away from duty station. May be required to travel in a fixed wing aircraft, helicopter, snow mobile, or snow cat to work sites.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, no substitution of experience is allowed.
