Summary
Are you interested in a career supporting investigative and intelligence operations at America's premier national security and law enforcement agency? As an Electronics Technician (ET), you will be directly involved with the installation, maintenance, and repair of the Bureau's electronic communications systems, data networks, and access control systems. The technician work you will perform in this position ensures the performance of communications equipment during investigative operations.
Requirements
Conditions of Employment
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must be able to obtain a Top Secret-SCI clearance.
- Must have (or be able to obtain) a valid driver's license.
- Some travel will be required for the position.
Physical Demands
Work requires strenuous physical exertion such as climbing tall ladders or towers, long periods of standing, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; and recurring lifting heavy objects in excess of 50 pounds such as radio and related communications systems.
Work Environment
Work involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations such as electrical shocks, falls from high towers, inclement weather conditions (rain, snow, ice, and high winds), requiring a range of safety and other precautions, including accompaniment by another technician when performing duties considered hazardous to life and limb. Work under conditions of extreme stress and tension resulting from need to maintain equipment in optimum working condition.
Qualifications
GS 07: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 05 grade level.
SE is defined as follows:
- Assisted with the physical installation and maintenance of electronic communication systems.
- Conducted routine equipment tests; performing basic corrections and/or replacing defective parts.
- Handled, stored, and inventoried a variety of electronic equipment and components.
GS 09: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 07 grade level.
SE is defined as follows:
- Performed physical installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electronic communication systems.
- Performed installations and preventive and corrective (or emergency) maintenance and service work on FM radio systems, data networks, or electronic physical security systems.
- Inspected equipment for adherence to standards and tolerances.
GS 10: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 09 grade level.
SE is defined as follows:
- Utilized test equipment and accepted techniques to perform installation, maintenance and repair tasks, and operational testing in at least one of the following areas: FM radio systems, data networks, and/or electronic physical security systems.
- Performed work with AC and DC circuits that includes: reading schematics, identifying electronic components, installing components, and soldering.
GS 11: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 10 grade level.
SE is defined as follows:
- Utilized test equipment and advanced techniques to perform installation, maintenance and repair tasks, and operational testing in at least two of the following areas: FM radio systems, data networks, and/or electronic physical security systems.
- Worked with the application of advanced electronics concepts using various electronics testing equipment including the multi-meter, oscilloscope (single and dual trace), spectrum analyzer, watt meter, frequency counter, spectrum analyzer, distortion analyzer, etc.
- Assembled and installed electronic devices and equipment; utilizing various applicable hand and power tools.
- Provided network configuration services that involve an understanding of various IP network protocols and sub-netting.
- Assisted higher grade technician(s) in carrying out electronic installation, replacement, and maintenance work.
GS 12: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 11 grade level.
SE is defined as follows:
- Utilized test equipment and advanced techniques to perform installation, maintenance and repair tasks, and operational testing in each of the following areas: FM radio systems, data networks, and electronic physical security systems.
- Performed technician work involving AC and DC circuits that involve interpreting schematics, and the utilization/integration of various electronic components.
- Carried out the installation, replacement, and analysis of electronic security systems; making recommendations on design or alteration based on data collected through testing or other analytical methods.
- Provided physical installation and configuration of network devices (routers, switches, and encryption devices) that involve an understanding of IP network protocols, Virtual Private Networks, and sub-netting.
- Conducted a competent inspection, maintenance, and repair program to insure optimum operational capability of all electronic and electro-mechanical systems and equipment including stand-by and emergency equipment and/or systems.
Education
All degrees must be from an accredited college or university. Education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows:
Degrees must be in one of the following fields: Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, Networking, Telecommunications, or Computer Science.
GS 07: Applicant must have a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement or one (1) full year of graduate level education. Superior academic achievement is the completion of all the requirements of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, which is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average of 3.0 or higher as recorded on an official transcript, or as based on courses completed during the final two years of the curriculum, or (3) honor society membership.
GS 09: Applicant must have a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.
GS 10/11/12: Education cannot be substituted for SE at the GS 10/11/12 grade levels.
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
