Summary

About the Position: This position is located at the 59th Medical Wing - Joint Base San Antonio - Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center; Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. The applicant filling this position will be conducting the duties of a paramedic.

Duties

  • Perform paramedic level emergency medical treatment to provide the most extensive pre-hospital care.
  • Identify, treat, communicate, and document airway obstructions, respiratory arrest, and cardiac arrest.
  • Perform advanced airway techniques including the use of an esophageal or dual lumen airway device, oral intubation using laryngoscopy, needle or surgical cricothyrotomy, pleural decompression, and automatic transport ventilator devices.
  • Perform pulmonary resuscitation if breathing fails to start spontaneously upon the opening of the airway, using appropriate techniques such as mouth-to-mouth, mouth-to-nose, and mask-to-mouth.
  • Control external bleeding with direct pressure and treats shock with pneumatic anti-shock garments.
  • Splint and immobilize fractures and dislocations for transport.
  • Respond to on-site accidents or other emergencies involving injury and/or illness.
  • Perform routine medical technician duties in the Emergency Room, acute care clinic, primary care clinic, or similar type location.
  • Operate Emergency Vehicle (EV).

Conditions of Employment

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
  • This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid stateside driver's license.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Basic Requirement for Emergency Medical Technician (Ambulance Driver):

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with performing emergency medical treatment; responding to on-site accidents or other medical emergencies; and operating an emergency vehicle (EV). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
  • a current National Registry Paramedic Certification is highly desired.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Position is considered emergency essential because (1) No qualified and immediate replacement exists; (2) having it vacant would/impair effective operation of essential military support system/adversely impact combat mission of deployed forces. Failure to remain in your position may result in separation for the efficiency of the Federal Service, (Ch 75 Title 5 USC; FPM Ch. 752).
