Duties

This position is aligned under the Grounds and Transportation Shop, Facilities Management Division, at the Clement J. Zablocki Medical Center, Milwaukee, WI (695) - a Level la Complexity VHA Facility. The work involves operating large equipment, driving vehicles (less than GVWR of 8000lbs), and performing grounds maintenance.

Engineering Equipment Operator Duties:
Incumbent operates one or more types of heavy equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to rough specifications on such projects as breaking new ground for construction sites. The incumbent will be performing in the excavation of soils to support necessary repairs to storm drains, steam pipes, electrical repairs, and water lines. The equipment will also be able to push, pull, pile, or load and unload materials such as sand, gravel, earth, coal, or refuse.

Incumbent operates and utilizes the following equipment and vehicles: John Deere 444J Heavy Duty Wheel Loader (plus attachments), Hyundai HL930AXT (plus attachments), JCB Telehandler, JLG ariel lift, Case 580 Backhoe, John Deere Tractor, Holder Model 259 Sidewalk Tractor, Trackless MT6 Sidewalk Tractor, New Holland Skid Steer (plus attachments), Z-spray Stand on sprayer ZS5260, Bobcat CT335 Tractor (plus attachments), Hustler 4400, 4600 and Z-series Industrial Lawn Cutting Tractors, other like rented equipment, pick-up trucks, vans, SUVs, and sedans.

Gardener Duties:
Incumbent performs a wide variety of duties involved in the development, care, and maintenance of trees, plants, shrubbery, recreational areas, and lawns. Throughout the season, the incumbent will clear brush, tree stumps, rocks and remove trees. Perform trimming, to hedges and shrubbery both for aesthetics, shaping and for good growing characteristics.

Utilizes stand on sprayers for fertilizing, pruning shears, chain saw, stump grinders, riding mowers, tractor, gasoline powered push mowers, gasoline string trimmers and vehicles with less than 8000 GVWR.

Motor Vehicle Operator Duties:
As a member of the Snow Emergency Response Team, incumbent performs snow removal from VAMC streets, sidewalks, and parking lots during by hand shoveling, snowblowers or with trucks, sidewalk plow, wheel loaders equipped with plow, bucket, pusher box and Hustler equipped with snow blower.

Works closely with Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) personnel performing grounds maintenance. Incumbent preforms safety inspections and preforms minor preventative maintenance on all equipment utilized and reports any repairs that incumbent could not accomplish to the Supervisor/Work Leader of the Transportation Team. As assigned, cleans and makes daily checks of fuel, oil, tires, hydraulic fluid, and battery of equipment to be utilized using the Pre-trip and post inspection log.

Operates a pressure washer, used to clean vehicles, various pieces of other heavy equipment, and areas such as sidewalks, brick, and stonework. Pressure washer is mounted on a stationary platform and is operated by a kerosene powered engine. Platform is moved by either pushing or pulling.

Incumbent drives pickup trucks, vans, SUVs, and sedans in accordance with station regulations and Wisconsin laws.

*Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM-4 PM and this position is considered emergency essential and may be required to work outside of his/her normal duty hours for snow emergencies and utility outages, maintenance and projects support, etc.

*The position is AWS eligible for 8 - 9 hr days, 1 - 8 hr day and one day off a pay period, the day off being a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.


*Work requires a valid Class D driver's license. This license must be kept current.*Incumbent must obtain (within 90 days of hire) and possess a Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection Commercial Applicator of Pesticides License. This license must be kept current.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is used by the incumbents in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Because of the location of some of the controls and attachments, the incumbents are frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in all types of weather, often in an open driver's seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forests. The incumbents are exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning. They are subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, fumes from the motor and exhaust, and other hazards. They are also exposed to the danger of serious accidents when operating grounds equipment. Work involves frequently climbing ladders and scaffolding and works in awkward positions. Assists in lifting and carrying assemblies to be installed. Subject to hazards of the trade such as cuts, bruises, dust, dirt, danger of falls from ladders, scaffold and equipment, eye and hand injuries when working with power equipment or occasionally subject to work in foul air where animals or pets have been kept. This position also requires moderate to heavy physical effort in frequent handling of heavier objects lifting to 50 pounds. They are continually required to sit and/or stand while working and must frequently climb
