This WG-5716-08 Engineering Equipment Operator position is part of the Facility Maintenance Division located at Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah.

This is a
permanent, full-time, Career-Seasonal position, subject to non-pay up to 1 pay period (2 weeks) each year, scheduled in early to late July. Please see the "Duties" section for more information.

Duties

This WG-5716-08 Engineering Equipment Operator position is part of the Facility Maintenance Division located at Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah. This is a permanent, full-time, Career-Seasonal position, subject to non-pay up to 1 pay period (2 weeks) each year, scheduled in early to late July. Career-Seasonal appointments include the same benefits as year-round Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis.

Major Duties:

  • Operates gas- or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler-type traction, such as road graders, tractors with bulldozer or angle dozer blades, front-end loaders, backhoes, wheel loaders, trench diggers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments.
  • Operates equipment to push, pull, pile, excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth and/or refuse.
  • Uses equipment to perform such functions as cutting, moving, digging, grading, and rolling earth, sand, stone, and other materials to maintain ditches, road shoulders, and beds.
Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the incumbent is frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions. The incumbent may be frequently required to lift and carry items weighing 50 pounds and put forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools.

Working Conditions: This position is required to perform work both inside and outside with most of the work performed outside. When working outside, the incumbent is frequently exposed to inclement weather. The incumbent works in rain, mud, snow, and in hot/cold temperatures and is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from noise, vibration, dust, dirt, fumes, exhaust, oils, heat, cold, and dampness. The incumbent is exposed to the potential of injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning, and may also be subject to receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises, and strains. While operating equipment, the incumbent is required to follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as protective hearing devices and hard hats.

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • DIRECT DEPOSIT: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • DRUG TESTING: You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • DRIVER'S LICENSE: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE (CDL): You must currently possess and maintain OR have the ability to obtain within 180 days of start date, a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker and 5th Wheel Endorsement.
  • UNIFORM: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • WORK SCHEDULE: You may be required to overtime.
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • TRAVEL: You may be required to travel occasionally overnight away from home up to 1 night per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
  1. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT). (i.e., I can operate at least 2 of the following types of engineering equipment on flat or rolling terrain, in refuse dumps, construction sites, or other similar areas to perform work such as cutting, moving, digging, grading, and rolling earth, sand, stone, snow, or similar materials, and to maintain roads, ditches, and/or road shoulders and beds: road graders, tractors with bulldozer or angle dozer blades, front-end loaders, backhoes, wheel loaders, trench diggers, dump trucks, large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments, rotary plows, crawlers, or equipment with mower and sweeper or sanding attachments. In addition, I have used a truck and trailer to load, secure, and haul equipment or materials to and from project sites.)
  2. Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles)
  3. Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading)
  4. Operation of Motor Vehicles
  5. Reliability and Dependability as an Engineer Equipment Operator

Additional information

Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. The climate is generally hot with daytime high temperatures ranging from 95 to 110 degrees in the summer, and 55 to 10 degrees in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 65 degrees in the summer to 10 degrees in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah, located two (2) miles from Park Headquarters. A full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious, and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane (25 miles), St. George, (45 miles), and in Cedar City, (63 miles), Utah. Elementary school (grades K-5) is available in Springdale, with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane, with bus service provided. Utah Tech University is located in St. George, and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City. **Due to the desirable nature of the area surrounding Zion National Park, please be sure to research and understand the limited housing options and the area's cost-of-living.**

Park/Government housing is not available for this position.
