Summary

About the Position: This position provides support to the 78th Medical Group at Robins Air Force Base, Houston County, Georgia.

Duties

  • Survey workplaces to evaluate hazards, collect employee data, and determine monitoring requirements.
  • Collect industrial hygiene data to assess degree of hazard and worker exposure including noise, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, ventilation, chemical use, air quality, ergonomics, confined spaces, and thermal stress.
  • Manage base-wide programs affecting industrial workplace to include Hazard Communication and Respiratory Protection, to provide training and ensure compliance with regulations, laws and standards.
  • Conduct Bioenvironmental Engineering medical readiness duties to include conducting or directing surveys, participating in exercises, providing guidance on health hazards, protective measures and decontamination procedures.
  • Conduct training for medical and non-medical personnel on the medical aspects of defense again nuclear, biological and chemical agents.
  • Direct environmental and occupational health functions to include assessing water, waste treatment and pollution sources to recommend corrective actions and ensure functions are in compliance with environmental and occupational health directives.
  • Serve as a member of the base initial response force, responding to emergencies 24-hours/day.
  • Maintain inventory of radiation sources, both ionizing and non-ionizing on the installation, surveying facilities, equipment, materials and operations for hazards.

Conditions of Employment

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • Tuberculin (TB) testing is required.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 25 pounds is required.
  • Will be required to work extended and/or irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules during exercises or contingency situations.
  • Must be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection IAW OSHA Standard 19190.134 and may be required to wear a personal protective equipment and/or clothing.
  • Work may require temporary duty travel to another location or institution on military or commercial aircraft.
  • Selectees will be required to support non-duty hour activities to include exercises, disaster response or emergencies.
  • May be required to participate in continuing education seminars, workshops, training, and lectures to update knowledge, maintain registration, and maintain currency on mandatory organization training requirements.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens

In order to qualify, you must meet the education or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes identifying health hazards in one or more areas of environmental sanitation, using survey techniques and control/eradication methods to collect data and remediate findings. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

NOTE: Experience may have been gained in work fields such as biological technician, medical technician, pest control technician, quality control positions with dairy or food service industries, or environmental health worker.
Journey level experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work was closely associated with and provided the required knowledge of environmental health techniques, methods, and skills, e.g., pest control operator, water plant operator.

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: environmental health, public health, or public health with a concentration in environmental health.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

  • May be exposed to industrial hazards during workplace visits.
