Summary

This position is located in the Environmental, Safety, Healthy, and Energy Division at the United States Mint in Denver. As an Environmental Protection Specialist, you will ensure the Denver Mint complies with current laws, regulations and ordinances regarding chemical products that are considered hazardous and serve as an advisor to management on environmental and hazardous chemical product issues.

Duties

As an Environmental Protection Specialist you will:

  • Plan and implement programs to ensure the Mint complies with all applicable requirements for use, storage, discharge, emissions, and disposal of hazardous chemical products
  • Analyze and interpret Federal and State law on a constant basis assuring the Denver Mint is in full compliance
  • Assure legal requirements for storing, classifying, manifesting, labeling, packaging, transportation, and disposing of hazardous wastes are carried out
  • Lead the Mint during environmental regulatory audits and permit inspections
  • Determine the requirements for obtaining permits from local, State, or Federal regulatory agencies and prepare and file the necessary documents to obtain and maintain such permits
  • Ensure compliance with applicable policy and regulatory agencies
  • Develop and conduct a variety of training to Mint employees who are responsible for handling hazardous chemical products and wastes
  • Identify the need for engineering studies and projects to prevent or reduce emissions or discharges of pollutants or hazardous waste and coordinates with the appropriate management teams to determine what environmental factors need to be considered when facility projects are being planned

  • All employees must wear face masks while on MINT property when required by CDC and Federal guidelines.
  • All newly appointed employees to the competitive (or excepted) service are subject to a probationary (or trial) period. During this time, your performance, conduct, and suitability for continued employment will be evaluated. You will not automatically convert to permanent status at the end of the probationary (or trial) period. Your supervisor must affirmatively determine that continued employment is in the best interest of the Federal service. If no certification is made before the probationary (or trial) period ends, your appointment will be terminated. You are encouraged to actively engage with your supervisor, seek feedback, and understand role expectations. Additional guidance and support will be provided during onboarding.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Public Trust - Background Investigation will be required.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
  • Have your salary sent to a financial institution of your choice by Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form I-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
  • May be required to file a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report within 30 days of appointment and annually from then on.
  • May be able to undergo an income tax verification

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Specialized Experience for the GS-12, you must have one year (full 52 weeks) of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:

- Preparing written reports giving recommendations for solving environmental issues or problems; AND
- Monitoring compliance or training on the preparation of environmental compliance reviews; AND
- Preparing environmental assessments or impact statements.

This announcement uses the Rule of Many, a numerical ranking process under which eligible applicants receive a numeric score based on the assessment process for the position.
