Summary

This position is located in the Historic Architecture, Conservation and Engineering Center of the Planning Conservation and Facilities Assistance Directorate of the Interior Region 1.

This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of nine years.

Duties

As an Exhibits Specialist, GS-1010-11, with the National Park Service (NPS), your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare detailed drawings and instructions for the restoration or rehabilitation of historic buildings.
  • Identify period-appropriate tools, materials, and techniques needed to ensure modern construction blends seamlessly into historic properties.
  • Monitor the completion of project work, including approving the work of contractors and tracking budgets.
  • Provide guidance to craftspeople on the use of special hardware or techniques used on assigned projects
  • Conduct research to determine the original condition of historic structures.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 10 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • This term appointment is in support of the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA), National Parks and Public Lands Legacy Restoration Fund (LRF). Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/31/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

In order to be qualified for this position, you must possess one of the following:

One year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service conducting research on historic structures to provide input into preservation/restoration plans; preparing drawings or reports to document the condition of historic structures; and applying established techniques to preserve or restore historic materials.

OR

Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a PhD or equivalent graduate degree in illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or other fields related to the position

OR

Combination of graduate level education as described above and specialized experience as described above that when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement.


Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. Education

To qualify based on education, you must possess three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a PhD or equivalent graduate degree in illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or other fields related to the position

You must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Physical Demands: The work requires some heavy physical labor but is primarily sedentary.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office setting, with some travel required.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
