Duties

Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, maintains, modifies, adjusts, and overhauls a wide variety of athletic equipment at thirteen facilities aboard MCB Camp Pendleton and MCLC Barstow, including Strength and Conditioning Centers. Assists with technical inspections on equipment to determine feasibility of turning in as unserviceable for disposition.  Using Fitness EMS, reviews and coordinates with supervisor for required daily maintenance jobs. Assembles all equipment and parts.  Prepares and maintains an adequate inventory of all parts for equipment.  Contacts companies that supply equipment to obtain information concerning price lists for spare parts and maintenance kits for purchase.  Conducts research through sport technology publications and/or other media to find the best way obtaining spare parts.  Ensures that commonly used spare parts are maintained at acceptable stock levels.  Maintains records of work to identify particular equipment that consistently have trouble.  Correctly prepares and submits all purchase requests for spare parts in a timely manner. Updates database with repairs and costs as completed. Performs preventative maintenance on all fitness equipment. Reupholsters pads and benches following established procedures. Drives to various locations on base to inspect fitness equipment. Ensures that all tenets of EEO and safety regulations are followed.

Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner.  Takes action to solve problems quickly.  Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards.  Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor.  Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

EVALUATIONS:

Qualifications

Must have full knowledge on wide range of athletic equipment and their parts in order to select substitute parts, which would be suitable for use in fabricating parts.  Must be able to independently interpret and apply technical and manufacturer's manuals, diagrams, and specifications.  Must have first-hand experience working with mechanical type hand tools.  Skill in soldering and brazing broken parts, reshaping parts by grinding and filing, fabricating parts that are not available in stock.  Knowledge in maintaining adequate spare parts inventory for different types of weightlifting and exercise equipment. Reupholstering fitness equipment pads and performing routine part replacement experience is preferred.  Must have a valid driver's license. 

Work is normally assigned through work orders. Works independently with minimum supervision.  Periodically follows preventive maintenance schedules established by the manufacturer and supervisor.  Selects tools and equipment, and determines whether parts can be repaired or must be replaced, make necessary adjustments, and complete assignments with little or no direction.  The incumbent is responsible for maintaining stock levels of parts, tools and equipment and initiating purchase requests. Updates FitnessEMS for maintenance and parts daily. Completed work is checked by the supervisor for timeliness and proper operation of the equipment.

Lifts and carries objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance. The incumbent is required frequent bending, reaching, stooping, standing and working in awkward positions.

Work is performed primarily indoors in a climate controlled environment. Some facilities are not air-conditioned and can reach temperatures of over 90 F. Exposure to daily possibilities of cuts, bruises, abrasions, and electrical shock. Must wear protective equipment as required by job.
