Clarification from the agency

This position is being filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority and is open to U.S. citizens and nationals who meet all eligibility requirements, including permanent and exclusive residency within the defined vicinity of the field unit as described in this announcement. Under this authority, veterans' preference and traditional rating and ranking procedures do not apply. Open to ICTAP/CTAP eligible applicants.

Duties

The incumbent performs a wide range of duties to support management of the Natchez Trace Parkway, the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail, and Old Natchez Trace trail segments. Duties include trail maintenance and repairs; operation and maintenance of trail equipment; marking trails to meet public needs; delivering trail materials and supplies to work locations; responding to trail problems reported by visitors (such as downed timber); and working with youth groups and volunteers on trail rehabilitation projects.

You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel occasional overnight away from home. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

Requirements Continued... Additional information

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is within 75 miles of each respective duty location. Residency will be verified during the hiring process.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity, include frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons with rock bars, using hammers to crush or shape rock, and using shovels extensively; frequently walks up to 20 miles daily; and must not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time.

Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects. Trail work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rock, working in and around rock slide areas, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.
