Summary

This position is located in the Division of Insurance and Research, Research & Regulatory Analysis Branch, Regulatory Analysis Section of the FDIC. The Section primarily supports the Corporation’s rulemaking process by conducting analysis on the expected effects of such actions. Additionally, the Section conducts financial and economic analyses in support of the Corporation’s efforts to identify, monitor and address existing and emerging aggregate risks to the FDIC’s Deposit Insurance Fund.

Duties

At the full performance level, major duties include:

  • Formulates and guides comprehensive research and analysis, including gathering and analyzing reports and quantitative data from a wide variety of sources to identify particular economic, market, or other factors affecting the financial system, banking industry, and/or the economy, and assessing the adequacy of existing corporate-wide programs, policies and procedures.
  • Serves as authoritative technical advisor. Identifies, measures, interprets and/or forecasts the effects and relationships between economic, market and other factors affecting the financial system, banking industry, and/or the economy.
  • Serves as a consultant to senior executives on work that directly impacts Corporate-wide programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Constructs original, informative visual aids, including charts, simulations, and other graphical methods to convey information to audiences of varying technical background, including non-technical and technical.
  • Writes descriptions of relevant risks and trends, incorporating accepted methods of economic, financial and statistical analysis, and incorporating the input of other management and staff in DIR and other FDIC business units to ensure that written material reflects the collective judgment of the organization.

Qualifications

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. 1. Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus. 

Or

B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

2.  ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT:  In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement, applicants must meet the defined qualification requirements listed below:

To qualify at the grade CG-12: Applicants must have completed at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 11 level or above in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience using economic principles, theories and models as part of a publication to meet an institutional objective, or for internal research; performing economic research and analyses of the financial services industry, financial markets, global economic developments, or economic policy.

To qualify at the grade CG-13: Applicants must have completed at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 12 level or above in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience using economic principles and theories to design models as part of a publication to meet an institutional objective; designing and conducting economic research and analyses of the financial services industry, financial markets or economic policy.

To qualify at the grade CG-14: Applicants must have completed at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 13 level or above in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience working as an economist to conduct and direct research on the financial system, banking industry, and financial regulations; design and use financial and econometric models.

Additional information

Selectee(s) for this position will be required to report to their duty station office at least 1 day per pay period beginning January 2, 2024, and at their supervisor’s direction to support mission and project needs. In person reporting requirements are expected to increase in July 2024.
