Summary

This position is located in Division of Depositor and Consumer Protection (DCP), Consumer Research Unit and is responsible for conducting and advising on major economic research and analysis projects.

Duties

At the full performance level, major duties include:

  • Plans, conceptualizes, and conducts research on consumer access to and use of banking and financial services and engagement with the banking and financial services industry and markets, with particular emphasis on how these developments affect FDIC-insured institutions.
  • Leads, or takes a significant role in, the planning, development and production of major and minor FDIC publications to disseminate analysis to supervisory personnel, senior management of the Corporation, other regulators, the industry, the academic community, and the general public.
  • Performs mathematical, econometric and statistical calculations; constructs visual aids that convey technical information to general audiences.
  • Plans and carries out research projects, studies, and analyses, including determination of data needed to complete assignments; sources, reliability, and availability of such data; methods appropriate to carry out the analysis; evaluation techniques to be used in interpreting findings.
  • Writes clear and concise descriptions of analyses and findings, incorporating the input of other
    DCP management and research staff to ensure that the findings included in the written material is supported by the research methods, data, and techniques employed in the study.
  • Publishes studies in external publications including Working Papers, FDIC Staff Studies, and other FDIC publications, as well as peer-reviewed journals.
  • Presents economic research at seminars and conferences. Provides constructive feedback on the research of colleagues by participating in seminars, discussing papers at conferences, and refereeing for peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. To qualify, applicants must meet the Basic Requirements and the minimum qualifications to qualify for each grade they wish to be considered for.

Basic Requirement:

A) Degree in economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting or calculus.

OR

B) A combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement above, applicants must also meet the minimum qualifications to be considered:

To qualify for the CG-12, applicants must have completed at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS/CG-11 grade level or above in the Federal service.  Specialized experience is defined as:
Experience using economic principles and theories to perform economic research and analysis of the financial services industry or of economic policy; designing and using advanced financial or econometric models.
To qualify for the CG-13, applicants must have completed at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS/CG-12 grade level or above in the Federal service.  Specialized experience is defined as:
Experience using economic principles and theories to perform economic research and analysis of the financial services industry or of economic policy to inform economic policy decisions; designing and using advanced financial or econometric models as part of a publication or to meet an institutional objective.
To qualify for the CG-14, applicants must have completed at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS/CG-13 grade level or above in the Federal service.  Specialized experience is defined as:
Experience using economic principles and theories to perform economic research and analysis of the financial services industry or of economic policy to inform policy or business decisions; designing and using advanced financial or econometric models to address specific economic policy problems; and presenting analytical results.

Education

There is no substitution of education for the experience for this position.

Additional information
