In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. To Qualify for the GS 8 Level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes developing, implementing, providing training in fire protection and prevention, to include detection, reduction, and/or elimination of potential fire hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the specialized experience required to qualify for the Fire Protection Inspector (GS-08 level) you must also possess and maintain ALL the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) certifications:
- Fire Fighter I and II,
- Fire Officer I,
- Fire Inspector I and II,
- Fire Instructor I,
- HAZMAT Material Technician
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) NOTE: (Emergency medical certification must be issued by the State or National Registry). Maybe selected for the position with current State Emergency Medical Technician but has six months from date of employment to transfer to National Registry Emergency Medical Technician. Employee must maintain current Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider(CPR and AED) certification card.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).

Current employees applying under VEOA are subject to time-in-grade restrictions like any other GS employee.
