To qualify for the GS-07 grade level you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
Some examples of specialized experience include:
- Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade;
- Rescue operations;
- Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards;
- Operation of fire communications equipment;
- Controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or
- Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.

In addition to the requirements above, possession of the following qualifications and certifications are highly desired upon application. These qualifications/certifications must be obtained within one year of employment and maintained:
Apparatus Driver-Operator for:
- Pumpers - Water Tender
- Firefighter I & II
- Fire Officer I
- Fire Instructor I
- Fire Inspector I
- Confined Space Rescue (when resources allow)
- HAZMAT Operations {awareness, and operations).
- Certifications in these areas shall be from the Department of Defense Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program (DIDFESCP) or equivalent training qualifications. All training and qualification certifications shall be accredited through the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).
- EMT - Basic Life Support
- EMT certification shall be in accordance with the State or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians requirements.
- ICS-100, ICS-200, IS-700 and IS-800
- Incident Command System (ICS) certification shall be in accordance with the National Incident Management System (NIMS.
National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
