Yellowstone National Park is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 6 months (1,039 hours) work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between park sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding. For information about work season, government housing availability, and rate of pay, please review the "Duties" below.

Duties

  • Serves as fully trained member of a firefighting crew
  • Performs difficult firefighting, medical aid, and rescue operations
  • Drives/operates firefighting equipment.
  • Performs maintenance, operational, housekeeping emergency standby duties.

Physical Demands: Occasional program review may entail hiking or climbing. Most work is accomplished in an office setting The incumbent is expected to maintain incident qualifications. They may undergo periods of high intensity arduous work in an outdoor and often hazardous setting. The incumbent is expected to maintain a fitness level and meet the NFPA medical standard appropriate to the incident qualifications requirement for positions certified. Fire inspections or program reviews may entail hiking or climbing. Most work is accomplished in an office setting, such as sitting for long periods, requiring intense concentration, attention to detail, and short deadlines. Presenting and instructing others or participating in large and small groups, task forces, committees, training sessions or workshops. All Risk Emergency Incident Management Team assignments and other field assignments may require an extensive amount of walking, bending, and climbing, and subject the incumbent to hazardous environmental conditions. As an instructor for fire suppression classes incumbent is exposed to hazardous conditions inherent with fire suppression classes which includes instruction to students inside a structure under live fire conditions Travel throughout the United States or abroad via commercial or government transportation.

Working Conditions: Much of the work is performed in an office setting; however, the incumbent is expected to be able to teach components of any one of the NPS training classes. Travel may be required to the Washington office, regional offices, and field areas for meetings, training, on-site inspections, and policy implementation.

AREA INFORMATION: Positions may be located at any of several locations within Yellowstone National Park. Most locations are 40-50 miles from the nearest gateway community with services (grocery stores, motels, restaurants, medical offices). Medical clinics are available in Mammoth Hot Springs, Lake Village, and Old Faithful. Park Headquarters is located at Mammoth Hot Springs, elevation 6200 feet. Elevation at the various duty stations range from 5300 feet to 7800 feet. Government housing is available.

  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • Prior to appointment, you must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties; and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician. You will also be required to undergo periodic medical examinations throughout employment.
    • The Work Capacity Test (WCT-Pack Test) or equivalent as a method for assessing an employee's fitness levels for fire qualifications in the positions covered by this recruitment notice. Employees required to pass a WCT-Pack Test as a "condition of employment" will be provided one opportunity to pass the required test with a second chance provided at the discretion of management based on the results of the first test. This recruitment notice constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements. NOTE: Arduous fitness (WCT-Pack Test) will consist of completing a three-mile hike, within 45 minutes, while carrying a 45 pound pack. A time of 45 minutes, the passing score for the test, approximates an aerobic fitness score of 45, the established standard for firefighters. Applicants shall be disqualified for appointment if they fail to meet any physical requirement.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Must be able to lift 75 pounds.
  • Must maintain a fitness level and meet the NFPA medical standard appropriate to the incident qualifications requirement for positions certified.
  • Must be able to pass a respirator fit test.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home on occasion,

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/31/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. Please also include the grade level of any federal civilian position.

To qualify for this position, you must possess the following minimum qualification by close of the announcement:

SELECTIVE FACTORS: In addition to the minimum qualifications described above, selectees must possess ALL of the following certifications for NFPA, IFSAC or Pro-Board 1) Firefighter I/II; 2) Haz Mat Operations - Driver/Operator Pumper; 3) National Registry EMT-B or higher level of EMS certification qualifications and training requirements to be considered eligible for this position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as 1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

REQUIREMENTS CONTINUED
You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
