Conditions of employment
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program.
- An individual not currently occupying a GS-0081 primary/rigorous position is required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical prior to being placed into this position.
- Incumbent is subject to periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- Incumbent must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
- Incumbent must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- Incumbent must wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- The work requires the incumbent to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid state and government driver's license is required as well as the appropriate Emergency Vehicle Operator’s certification.
- Incumbent must successfully complete an annual emergency vehicle operator’s course.
- Occasional Travel required (not more than 5%).
- Designated Mission Essential Position: Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief/Commander.
- Incumbent will be required to work a minimum of 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period), including at least one 24-hour shift per week and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be able to lift heavy objects of 50 pounds.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience for GS-5 level: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; AND (4) operation of fire communications equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted at GS-07 level.

DOD FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To occupy this position, at the time of appointment the incumbent must possess and then continue to maintain the following DoD Firefighter Certification levels:
- Must successfully, prior to promotion to theGS-05 obtain and maintain Firefighter I and II.
- Must successfully, prior to promotion to the GS-06 obtain and maintain Firefighter I and II, Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Operations, Driver Operator - Pumper, Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF).
- Must successfully, prior to promotion to the GS-07 obtain and maintain Firefighter I and II, Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Operations, Driver Operator - Pumper, Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF), Emergency Medical Technician - Basic, HAZMAT Technician, Driver Operator - Aerial.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions above at the GS-05 level only.
GS-06 level: No education substitution.
GS-07 level: No education substitution.
