In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) responding to alarms and combats fires utilizing knowledge of the proper firefighting and rescue techniques; 2) operating alarm room equipment (e.g., multi-channel radio console, computer systems, telephone systems, recording systems, etc.) and fire reporting devices; 3) containing and controlling toxic, hazardous and/or dangerous materials; and 4) performing inspections for fire hazards in areas such as, quarters, administrative buildings, barracks, warehouses, industrial shops, places of public assembly, and outside storage areas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Selective Placement Factor: This position requires you to possess and maintain all of the following Department of Defense, International Fire Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) equivalent certifications:

- Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations OR Technician
- State of Virginia or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate or higher Certification Card indicating a future expiration date.
- This position requires Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
- This position requires Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
